Hi I'm hoping someone has some advice. Well my dd2 (22month old) has been a bit moody lately and today her cheeks have been bright red. Someone mentioned slapped cheek and told me to get checked out as I'm pregnant and only 14wks. My mum has also said I've never had it. What happens if I get it or my unborn baby gets it is there medication we can take. Have any of you been in this situation. I maybe panicking over nothing.

I came into contact with slapped cheek (parvovirus) when pregnant, I think I was about 24 weeks. Someone I work with had come into work the day before coming out in the rash.

I work in a hospital but only found out after occupational health had gone home for the day on a Friday afternoon, so a midwife on labour ward took some bloods and sent them to virology, where they tested my antibodies and found that I was immune due to previous infection. My mum couldn't remember for sure if I'd had it, I don't think many mums could remember every single bug their kids had 25 years ago do your mum may have just forgotten.

If I was you I'd contact your mw or gp and have bloods taken to put your mind at rest, as there are potential complications for the baby if you do catch it, I believe that they will do regular scans if that happens to keep an eye on the baby.

Good luck x

yes, it's the kind of thing you could have had and not known you had it. I came into contact, was given a blood test that showed I was not immune but never contracted it.

I am a primary school teacher and found out last monday that a pupil in my class had slapped cheek. Phone the doc who asked if I had any symptoms which I didnt and told me I should be ok as I am 33 weeks pregnant and the risk is high up to 20 weeks. Phoned my midwife who advised getting bloods taken to see if i am immune. Went on Wednesday to doc who advised me to stay away from school until I have results of blood test. Still waiting for results and cant go to school tomorrow....really hoping the results come back tomorrow. I feel fine and pretty sure I have not caught it. Not sure how it actually affects baby but if you are not immune I think you will be scanned regularly to check all is well.

Hope this helps.

country the lab that tested my blood only ran the test on 1 day a week, I'm assuming that because it's not a common request they save them up to run together. I hope you're not waiting too long! The wait is horrible isn't it?

I was told that about scans too, to check growth and blood flow as parvovirus can rarely cause fetal anaemia, which would be treated with in utero blood transfusions.

Thanks all thought I replied but not showing my mum said that she knows I've never had it before I'm only 24 so thought she would remember. Anyway I will go to docs Monday and see what they say and see if the will do bloods just to be on safe side. My dd seems a bit better cheeks not as red. Thanks for all your quick responses :)
