Pregnancy

23weeks, bad cold and struggling to breathe

I'm 23weeks and have had a cold for a week.

Been quite breathless anyway (think bump is higher up than in my first pregnancy) but with the cold, I feel like I am fighting for every breath. On Christmas day I was told I had actually gone grey!

It seemed to get better, now getting worse
again. Going to the top of my house (three floors) makes me feel like I am going to pass out. I am not sleeping well at all because I am so bunged up, probably only had about four hours a night for the last week. Spent hours crying, assume because I am so worn out.

Should I see the GP? Is there anything he can
even do? Back at work on 3rd, am a primary school teacher and there is no way I will manage if I am still like this.

Yes see your Gp. You can have ABs if necessary. Please go. These things can be a lot more serious when you are pg as your immune system is suppressed.

Thanks, I will make an appointment for tomorrow. I know I can't take any decongestants or expectorants so wondered if the GP might say 'rest and fluids' and send me away!

I had the same at about the same stage. Told doctor I felt pathetic for coming with just a cold but he was very reassuring and said I'd done the right thing as colds can get nasty in pregnancy- antibiotics really helped. Good luck.

Ps if you feel really awful they should try to fit you in today if you tell them you're pregnant

They might say that, but better that than not getting help that you need. I learnt the hard way just how ill you can get when pg and it's not something I'd wish on anyone. Take care, get as much rest as you can (I know it's not always so easy) and definitely do not go to work if you are not up to it. Your health is more important.

I too had a awful, stinking cold for 6 weeks and then it turned into a chest infection. I felt rotten and dragged myself to work when I was feeling exhausted. In the end I had a week off work and I was prescribed some anti-biotics and I felt so much better afterwards. I still get a slight cough but I dont think that will go until my baby is born. You know what it is like your body is not your own when you are pregnant. I hope you feel better soon. xxx
