Would you eat souffle?

Aargh - pregnant SIL is coming for lunch today and I'm making souffle. Just dawned on me that she may not feel comfortable eating it! The thing is that I am actually pregnant too but am pretty relaxed about what I'm eating so would eat it with no qualms, but obviously I don't want her to feel under pressure to do so.

Would you feel comfortable eating it when pregnant?

"Only eat eggs that are cooked until both the white and yolk are solid, keeping away from things like homemade mayonnaise and soufflés, which may contain raw or partly cooked eggs."

No, I absolutely wouldn't have eaten it whilst pregnant with either of my 2.

I would, I think the chances of getting salmonella from eggs produced by salmonella innoculated chickens are really slim!
However, if it is a pfb then she may not and it would show you were thinking of her if you did a little something else for her, a nice gesture :)

I wouldn't. Why take the risk?

I would eat it! I've just had a google and apparently the advice for pg women not to eat partially cooked eggs precedes the introduction of the lion mark on eggs which is to show that the hen the egg has come from is vaccinated against salmonella. Therefore if the egg is lion marked and in date I wouldn't have a problem eating it partially cooked...in fact I've just eaten one! I can understand why some people don't but it's the one thing out of the lists of dont's that I do eat!

Hot or cold? Mind I'd eat it regardless.

I'd eat it. Been eating lion marked eggs all the way through this pregnancy as I love a dippy egg n soldiers. Everything In moderation I say. One souffle in a 40 week pregnancy ed be fine IMO. So long as you aren't eating them everyday

I would. But like a previous poster I don't have any qualms about eating partially-cooked lion marked eggs.

I probably would have been more fussy in my first pregnancy though - when I just did what the advice said rather than looking into the 'why' bit so much.

If you can show her it is made with lion marked eggs, then why not?

We usually get our eggs from a local free-range supplier but since being pregnant I've stuck to supermarket lion marked eggs just to be super safe. I couldn't give up my eggs soldiers - at one point it was all I could face eating!

Salmonella, unlike listeria, doesn't cross the placental barrier so the risk is for food poisoning and dehydration rather than birth defects.

I wouldnt. I was so sick at the start, then had a tummy bug. Its probably irrational but taking any chance is a no no.

I would eat it. But why not ask your friend. She'll appreciate your thoughtfulness.

I would have a back up lunch prepared for her.

I wouldn't - but then I wouldn't eat it not pregnant either as I don't like it!

But souffle is baked-usually for about 25-35 minutes in about 200 degrees Confused

Why wouldn't you eat it?

Yes I would but I wouldn't serve it to a pregnant guest without checking with her first.

I would because the chickens will have been vaccinated against salmonella (as might your local supplier's chickens, Issy, lots of friends with chickens in their gardens have bought them vaccinated).

Of course I would. Do you know how long you cook a souffle for? A looooong time.

Sorry for not returning - was busy cooking and entertaining all day and am now exhausted! Thanks for all the replies. I decided to make lemon sponge instead of souffle to be on the safe side and am pleased I did as she didn't like the starter - DH forgot that his DSis doesn't eat fish!

I'm going to carry on eating "not-completely-cooked" eggs in my pregnancy though. I agree that the risk of salmonella nowadays is really very low.
