Will a vomiting bug do any damage?

I'm 16 weeks and haven't kept anything down since Monday. I lost 3 pounds yesterday, all of it water, and I just feel so weak :( My kidneys hurt in my lower back, I guess because of dehydration. Dp has been fabulous and got me some lucozade which does seem to be staying down this morning so far, and I've been sucking on some clear mints to try and get some sugar. But I was worried before this as I was in a strange 'don't feel pregnant anymore' stage, which apparently is quite normal at this stage once the nausea has passed, but yeterday my uterus went rock hard after every bout of sickness, I guess just from the pressure. Is it worth calling a midwife? I meant to last week just for some reassurance but didn't get round to it. I obviously don't wan tthem coming here and catching whatever it is I've got either.

Definitely call the midwife. You also might need to go to the doctor. If you get truly dehydrated they may want to hospitalise you and put you on a drip.

By the way, you can't worry about someone catching what you have got when you need checking over/looking after. It is a hazard of the job.

I had rotavirus (or something very similar) at 31 weeks, caught at the GP surgery whilst visiting my MW; vomited overnight repeatedly before two awful days of diarrhea and being unable to do anything other than sleep. I called NHS direct, who advised that I was best off at home because of infection risk and that the Dr wouldn't be able to do much unless my dehydration needed treating. Your main risk is dehydration rather than running out of fuel for the baby - I lost about 8lbs but was still measuring fine at 34 weeks. You're better off with oral rehydration sachets and sipping the odd glass of water slowly, rather than lucozade, as lucozade has a lot of sugar in it (which can feel helpful at the time but can cause more dehydration as it isn't really isotonic); one or two bananas a day (for sugar and potassium, which you'll be losing), and dioralyte were my friends. If you're still able to go for a wee then you're not too dehydrated; if this stops, you need to call the hospital (I'd start with the MLU if this is where you're booked), as you'll need IV fluids. DH did get it as well after 36hrs or so (so the infection control advice was a good call), but by that stage I was starting to feel rather less ropey and could take care of myself.

I had a vomiting but at 31 weeks with DD and she is now 6.

I would call for advice re the dehydration though.

I've had two dreadful stomach bugs during this pregnancy and been assured by my midwife both time that it's me who is suffereing not the baby. However, I did ask the pharmacist about rehydration sachets and he told me it was best to avoid them if possible as although they were probably were OK, they haven't actually been green lighted in pregnancy. He actually said lucozade was best. Best to seek proper medical advice though.

Yep, I'd call midwife as dehydration is likely to lead to complications.

Can you try diaoralyte instead of lucozade? Lucozade has caffeine in it which may be more likely to 1) upset your tummy and 2) dehydrate you more.

Thanks everyone, I still feel rough but no vomitting today so far, which is progress. I just feel incredibly weak, my legs almost gave way on the school run Confused but I am tired so may actually sleep tonight rather then spend it bent over a bowl Hmm I am going to call the midwife team in the morning, because the tightening is still happening, I didn;t have braxton hicks with my other 2 so I'm sure it's just somehting new to me that's not actually anything to worry about, fingers crossed anyway. And I'm looking forward to scoffing my way to gaining those 3 pounds back Grin

I had d&v at 14/16 weeks with both my pregnancies, same times of year! The doctor said there was no risk to the baby/babies, and suggested dioralyte, which i can never drink again because it tastes like being pregnant! Hope you are feeling better :)
