None whatsoever, what on earth is wrong with that?

Are you worried about the mayo?

Its only unpasteurised mayo you should avoid, so unless you got it from a posh boutique deli where they make their own mayo from scratch you needn't worry at all.

why do you think you will have caused any damage?

Most mayonnaise is fine to eat. It will say if it isn't.

I dont think these cafes usually use pasterised stuff.
so just thought......

Which cafes?

Get a grip please otherwise you will spend the next 9 months a nervous wreck. If you're going to worry at least worry about the right stuff.

Report
ImpyCelyn · 15/09/2011 13:47

Most places use mayo that is absolutely fine. So unless it specifically said unpasteurised or made with raw egg, it should be fine.

Report
Crosshair · 15/09/2011 13:47

Even if its not pasterised the risks are very low and at 4/5 weeks must be pretty much non existant I would imagine.

Most cafes use pasterised mayo so I'm sure you'll be fine. Don't worry over silly things like a bit of mayo!!!
4/5 weeks I didn't even know and up until 7 weeks I got horribly drunk and ate all sorts of crap!!!
Chill out!!!!

Sidge · 15/09/2011 13:49

Most cafes use commercially prepared mayo which will have been pasteurised.

And the risk is primarily from food poisoning which would affect you rather than an embryo.

How many people do you know who get salmonella? Even if it's made with fresh eggs, unless they specifically went out and bought infected eggs, which are very rare these days, there is nothing to worry about.

GoingForABlog · 15/09/2011 13:51

There will be very, very few cafes that make their own mayo. I chose to avoid anything unpasturised but as CrossHair said, even if it was unpasturised any risk is still really low.

NIKNACK To clarify things - I am not going to be a nervous wreck, I already have a DD, I simply asked the innocent question as I'd read something and also someone told me to be weary which i just thought i'd double check :D

Thank you for the replies. I thought that most cafe's use the cheap mayonnaise which they get in huge tubs. but if they are pasteurised then bonus - more baguettes :)

Look they probably use Hellmans or similar out of a jar. Perfectly safe.
You will have a long 9 months ahead if you stress yourself out over every single thing that passes your lips.
Get yourself properly informed about what to eat and what not to eat. look at NHS website or a reliable pregnancy book.

Why do you think 'cheap mayo in huge tubs' is less likely to be pasteurised?

Report
GoingForABlog · 15/09/2011 14:10

Cheap mayo in big tubs will almost definitely be pasturised.

Report
kat2504 · 15/09/2011 14:13

It's posh home made mayo you can't have. The price and container of bog standard shop mayo makes no difference to the safety. Mayo in catering is likely to be safe because a business really can't afford to get done for food poisoning its cutstomers.

Report
ImpyCelyn · 15/09/2011 14:14

All the cheap stuff - mayo, cheese whatever - is more likely to be pasteurised.

Report
Dialsmavis · 15/09/2011 14:15

Its very hard to come by non pasturised Mayo (yum) unless you make it yourself.

Report
Flowerista · 15/09/2011 14:19

Feeling a bit quesy at the image of huge, glistening tub of cheapo Mayo my mind has conjured up. Pasteurised or not.

is this for real?

Before I knew I was pregnant (didn't find out until 7 weeks) I consumed:

Virtually raw steak (I like my meat RARE)
Rare hamburger (see above)
Fish carpaccio (I'll have my fish raw too if I can help it)
Various types of soft (and certainly unpasteurised) cheese
Red wine every night

I was, and am, absolutely fine.

I do sympathise with you - I'm now 13 weeks and I freaked last week as I inadvertently ate home-made ice cream which was made with raw egg yolks (I posted for reassurance here too, and got it!). That was Saturday, and I am fine.

As everyone above says, the chances of a cafe using unpasteurised mayo (unless it's a super posh 'gastro' type place) are really slim. I live abroad so standards here are a bit different, which I now know, but in the UK they are usually terribly cautious about raw eggs and such in restaurants.

Also, as far as I know, standard UK hens eggs have been vaccinated against salmonella? Someone please correct me if I am talking crap.

Report
kat2504 · 15/09/2011 14:24

They are vaccinated against salmonella. However, a medical person who knows about stuff in labs and whatnot that I conversed with on another forum says you should still cook them. Don't worry if you like a soft boiled egg, but still stay away from the raw ones.
