Bartholins abscess

Hi, 34 weeks today!
Anyway, I'd been having some pain down there for a few days but decided to wait until today when I saw midwife. It looked very red and swollen last night but I thought it would probably be nothing to worry about.

Anyway midwife sent me in to the Dr after my appt and he looked and said 'hmm, quite swollen and infected' He mentioned something about Bartholin gland and put me on a high dose of antibiotics (said I might get thrush with it Confused) and if it is not better by Friday that I had to go back.

So I am not sure if I actually have an abscess yet or if it is just infected (if there is a difference?)

What will happen if it doest clear up by Friday though? :(

I ve heard horrid stories about these (sorry!) but it soundd like you have caught it esrly. Some women have aginising pain and try and pop the abcess, but I think they can drain it if it doesn't go away.

I hope so Jelly. I have just been reading some nasty stories too online. I have found it difficult to sit and walk with it but not as agonising yet as I read it can get. It does look pretty horrid though :(

I was about to say "DO NOT GOOGLE", but you have already. The ABs should sort it out. Start eating lots of probiotic yogurts, they might just stave of thrush.

Yes, I would have said DO NOT GOOGLE but that's the first thing I did when I had one. Yark! Keep on those antibiotics!

Antibiotics will probably clear it, but don't try and squeeze it under no circumstances, it will be mega painful, and you risk having it back again.
If it doesn't go, nurse will probably lance it, my sister suffered with it twice, once was in pregnancy, good luck.

I had a Bartholin Cyst in my last pregnancy. Caught it quite early and it went down quickly enough. Very sore though.
No advise really, as it just went with the antibiotics, I hope it does the same for you.

Oooh painful! Mine took the full course of ABs to disappear, so bear with them. Poor old you.

Warm salty baths are good - chuck in a pound of salt - it draws the pus out and is ever so cleansing of course.

Can I use just normal salt ? Thanks peggy :(

Thank you for this thread! I'm 39 weeks today and have got one of these. Have been swithering about going to the doctors or not. I'm doing the warm salty bath thing (normal salt) and regular hot compresses but may call tomorrow if things haven't calmed down. Not sure I want to be giving birth with it still there!

Ooooooh - poor you. I had a recurring Bartholins abcess a few years ago and evenutally they removed the gland altogether. I'm keeping fingers crossed that the anti-bs will sort it out and you can avoid excision (although even if this does happen, it should be well on the way to being healed by the time the baby comes). Very positive thoughts heading your way xx

Oh kettle please go if its no better, some of the stories of full blown ones are horrid and you have enough on your plate with the birth impending.
Thanks London, I read a bit about the excision and some seem to say that it should be left until after deliverey in case of excess bleeding, I'm also on blood thinners which might complicate it a bit more with the bleeding. Not sure.
I do feel its a bit less uncomfortble today and have been walking around with only slight pain so hopefully AB's will get it! x
