ectopic pregnancy? so worried

Had bfp last saturday and ever since have had this horrible feeling that all is not well, i cant explain it at all.

Have been having mild twinges on my left side and tonight had a sharp pain in my left shoulder for just a few seconds so now of course iam worrying that it could be an ectopic pregnancy.

Has anybody had these twinges and it all turned out to be fine? Iam really panicking. Went to gp yesterday and asked for the hcg test that you have done twice over 48hrs as thought that might reassure me that things were progressing because of the twinges and worry ive had but she said it was too early to have it done and bloods probably wouldnt give them any answers.Gp said she would phone epu and they would contact today to arrange a scan for me but they havnt called.

I already have 3 dcs and the only time ive ever felt like this before was when i had a mmc and im so worried as it was exactly the same horrible feeling that something just wasnt right Sad

Sorry such a long post, maybe iam just being paranoid?

Sorry that you are worrying. Twinges in early pregnancy are very normal and if you are worried and feeling tense that may be causing the pain in your shoulder.

How far along are you? IF it was an ectopic pregnancy then you would be extremely unlikely to rupture before you were six weeks. Protocol for people having had a previous ectopic is to have a scan at six weeks - it is thought that the risk before then is negligible. The shoulder pain that can occur with an ectopic is normally one of the later signs that occurs when there is significant internal bleeding.

However, I am a firm believer in listening to your body and going with your instinct. Your GP is contacting the EPU for you. I would call them tomorrow and see if they have got the referral from your doctor. If they haven't chase up your doctor again. Make sure you are familiar with the symptoms of an ectopic and if you do start to feel unwell seek medical attention quickly.

Take care, congratulations and let us know how you get on. Smile

Thankyou marrow, i think iam only just 5 weeks (last period was 22july but i have an odd irregular cycle).I think i am just so worried as the overwhelming feeling of 'something just isn't right' seems to be all consuming just as it was from the very beginning of my pregnancy which resulted in a mmc.

I was not like this with my pregnancies with my 3 dc and with all of them i had hyperemisis from about 4 weeks but this time (as it was with the mmc too-no sickness)so i do feel as if my body is trying to tell me something.

Hopefully i will get my scan appt before iam 6 weeks then at least i will know what is happening and like you said if ectopics dont usually rupture before 6 weeks then even if it was it would be treatable rather than an emergency.

The hard thing is the not knowing and feeling so miserable, i have wanted a fourth for such a long time it would complete our family and i was over the moon when i got my bfp.

call the EPU tomorrow.

I had an ectopic with only vague twinges and a massivly ovrwhelming sense of something wrong. I hope you are not but you need to be checked sooer rather than later.

i will definately try to contact them tomorrow and if i have no luck (local hospital is v v busy and overstretched appts at epu are hard to get i had trouble when i had my mmc diagnosed) then iam considering private early scan or would they not be able to see anything yet? im so early that i am not sure anything would be visible

Really hope things work out for you and you get a scan date soon. If you got a private scan at six weeks it would be able to check if ectopic but it may be too early to see a heartbeat. Most EPUs won't scan until seven weeks for this reason.

I've been in your position several times and I really do feel for you - the waiting is the worst.

Poor you cantsleep, I sympathise, I had a similar experience a few weeks ago when I was 6 weeks preg. My midwife pals reassured me it was unlikely to be ectopic because they don't usually present themselves until 10 weeks, and usually the pain in worse than what you are describing (not trying to downplay yours, btw)
I had a few days wait for an epu scan that was very reassuring. Baby definately not ectopic. They had a good luck at my ovaries in case a cyst was to blame, and also looked for a haematoma as I had bled a fair bit as well. It was decided my pain was not caused directly by my pregnancy, it was actually an old back injury (slipped disc) which was flaring up and causing nerve pain in my vauge 'ovary area' and groin. It's since got a little worse but even I know it's most definately siatica now, very classic bottom pain Grin
I will keep my fingers crossed for you. Mind, if you have any worse pain or begin to bleed get yourself checked out straight away, even if it means the dreaded a&e!

thankyou VFVF i think its just the waiting and not knowing thats the hard bit iam just so terrified something is wrong to the point of almost being irrational. I wasnt like this with my 3 dcs only with the pg that ended with mmc.

I suppose i just have to keep my fingers crossed and wait till tues.back pain still bad but twinges are so mild and are not 'painful' im just aware of them on one side.

I thought the 2ww was bad, now i think the 4 day wait will be worse! I just want to know things are all ok

I understand, the waiting is torture.

P.S. Why hot give them a ring on Monday just incase they've had any late cancellations? May shorten your wait by a day?

Where do you live cantsleep? St. George's in Tooting have a no questions asked walk in EPU 7 days per week. It's a little like a&e with waiting times but at least you will be scanned.
