Probably Overreacting - caffeine

I had a coffee (well 2) a wee while ago that was unbelievably strong, I was actually buzzing and felt a bit sick. Baby hasn't moved for about 4 hours now which is quite uncommon as it moves around all day. I don't normally drink coffee but this was a bit of a treat. Now I'm worried that I've done some harm? I just need a bit of reassurance.
Thanks so much.

Sorry - I'm 35 weeks gone.

It won't be anything to do with caffeine.

But if you have noticed a change in the number of movements, then ring your MW team for advice or go to a drop-in unit. "Count the kicks" is a serious thing.

Give your mw a wee call. Better an embarrassing call than something being wrong.

You're right - I'll give them a call now.

Try not to fret - chances are everything is fine, and s/he is just having a nap at an unusual time.

The caffeine risk thing really apparently only applies to the first trimester as they think that too much (ie much more than 2 coffees) may possibly increase the risk of miscarriage. You are well past that now so I doubt the coffee can do anything.
That being said if you are at all worried it is always better to ask as you may need to be checked out for other reasons.

Or may have turned around and is now bashing away at your placenta so you can't feel it as much -- that happened to me around 30 weeks.

At my 20 week scan, the sonographer actually sent me out to have a strong coffee and then another one as my little one wasn't cooperating.

When I have caffeine it has the opposite effect, baby goes absolutely mental!

I know it's trite but my mother, who's a MW, lives on caffeine and when pregnant with me still drank her eight cups of coffee a day and I turned out fine :)

I hope you've spoken to your MW and been given some reassurance.

Have a cold glass of OJ and lay down. If you still don't get any movement ring the MW. I am sure its just a coincidence rather than the coffee.

Glowbuggy - it's a while since you posted. I hope all is well.

I didn't realise it was mainly the first trimester. I've really struggled giving up tea and gone from about 8 a day to 2. Last couple of weeks I've slacked and it's become 3 or 4 so I'm glad of that!

TBH I would think that any effect from the caffeine at 35 weeks would be to make the baby go bonkers rather than anything else. But ring the mw if you're in any way worried.

Oh, didn't notice the time difference. Hope everything is ok.

Hi, thanks for the advice, did call the MW and had a quick check. BP fine, heartbeat fine and now my little kicky baby has returned.
Sorry to over-react, this is my first baby and I get a little anxious sometimes.

Glad all is well :) Anxiety is part of the package. I'm on dc2 and still freak out at the slightest thing!

Glowbuggy Yay! EVerything's good.
I'm a migraineur so on a caffeine free diet anyway. The 'buzz' and feeling sick (I get cramping too sometimes) always happens to me if I have a strong coffee (sometimes places just forget the 'decaf' bit of the order), and I will often get a migraine soon after. I'd day this is just your bod. reacting to the caffeine as it's not used to it anymore.
I pretty much only ever use caffeine to help as a muscle relaxant during a migraine, and then it's usually in tablet form and has worn off before the rest of the meds. I don't get as an extreem a reaction with tea.

The best decaf coffee I've found it the Pelican Rouge decaf they serve in John Lewis. Actually tastes nice - though not available retail apparently. The next best is the Cafe Direct Decaf (the instant's ok, the ground's good).

The best decaf tea by far is the 'Yorkshire Tea' decaf. Doesn't have the aftertaste of seaweed, unlike Tetleys, PG Tips, Twinnings etc.
