I have been pregnant 3 times and had 3 healthy babies....I had LOADS of hot baths while pregnant!

Don't panic, it will be fine. Sometimes a hot bath can make you feel a bit dizzy, so be careful from that perspective, but otherwise I'm sure it will be fine. Smile

As long as it wasn't hot enough to scald you, it'll be fine! Smile

I usually have reeeaaally hot baths, but am also 20wks and try to have the water hot but not so hot it makes me sweat iyswim.

Baths were the norm before people had showers in their houses, remember.

Think it has to be pretty hot (to the point of unbearable) to make your body temp to increase to dangerous level.

I have hot but not itchy bottom hot when pregnant.

'Itchy bottom hot' - what a good description!

It's not good to elevate your temperature that much when you are pregnant - so I would have it the lowest temperature that's still comfortable (that's terrible english but I hope you know what I mean).

I am a hot bath monster!! Had lots of hot baths and 30 weeks - all is well! Did turn it down a notch or two from pre preg baths. I keep mixing cold water in. I wouldn't go mental with it but a good hot bath isn't going to be a problem

Anecdote does not equal data.

Just because other people were fine, it does not make it a wise thing to do.

It isn't dangerous.

A very hot bath in late PG might make you dizzy or pass out or something, but it won't make you miscarry. This is a myth dating back to pre-legal-abortion days.

i have had nice warm / hot baths throughout my pregnancy (am now nearly 36 weeks)
Pretty much every night actually.
Have also been in steam rooms (for 5 mins max followed by a cool shower) & bath thermae spa....

the issue is raising your core body temperature, and i cant believe my core body temperature raises in the time im in there.

I wouldnt sit in one for an hour (where as i might if not pg)

Never mind the risks, I can't imagine wanting a hot bath whilst pregnant. Luke warm is the best I can manage at the moment due to being constantly hot and clammy. And I used to LOVE hot baths!

Don't worry - it's only at a very hot temperature that it can make you feel unwell. I am 20 weeks and loving the baths :)

I did a lot of research I to this when pg with DS as I was going to a super posh spa and wondered about the truth about pg women using jacuzzis etc.

I am a biologist so happy to read scientific papers and anything that I would come across to answer my query.

What I found out was that during the 19050s or 60s there was some evidence to suggest that raising the core body temperature during pregnancy could lead to miscarriage. However the findings were generally discredited as the research had not been done on a large enough scale and experts were generally of the opinion that there was not enough evidence to suggest that hot baths would lead to miscarriage.

The fact is that spa baths and jacuzzis give the warning for pg women not to use them as the establishments a basically covering their own backs. Because there has been a link with hot baths and miscarriage they are taking no risks. But that is where most people pick up that pg women should not take hot baths.

As for me, I had bought a bath thermometer or when DS was born and intrigued at how hot my own nightly hot baths were. I put it in and discovered that the bath that I had every night during my pg was about 40.5degrees which is hot hot hot and hotter than most jacuzzis anyway! So DS is super healthy 15 monhs old, the nightly hot baths obviously had no effect on him.

I am almost 34 weeks and have a bath every night. I asked my midwife earlier on, and she said it's fine. In fact, I wouldn't go without them now - some days it's the only place where I can read a book without feeling uncomfy in some way! I find you just have to watch feeling dizzy though.
