BFP after IVF/ICSI - how long did you continue with progesterone?

Hi ladies

According to my clinic I should continue my twice daily progesterone suppositories for 4 weeks after a positivie pregnancy test, so 8 weeks in total. I'm wondering how long others have stayed on them as this seems to be much less time than a couple of other people I've asked. I know the body starts making it at some point but I thought that was after 10 weeks. When my first prescription ran out my clinic told me to get the next lot from my GP. She said she'd never prescribed progesterone to anyone on ivf before (?! I can only presume most people continue to get it from their clinics?) and would only prescribe 4 week's worth after seeing the paperwork from my clinic. So there's no way I'll be able to get any more from her!

Hopefully I'm just being paranoid about it but it's been such a long journey to get here. Thanks for reading.

I took it for 12 weeks, as did everyone else I know who had IVF. The first time my clinic provided all meds on private prescription.

This time (natural BFP with help from steroids, clexane and progesterone) my GP prescribed them on repeat prescription for me.

HTH

Congratulations!

I was on progesterone until 9 weeks. AFAIK some clinics don't provide any progesterone (as the embryo does produce it) but others go so far as to prescribe it until 12/13 weeks. I went private and was happy with 9 weeks (my belief being they got me pregnant so I should trust them!). I did have a private prescription but my GP prescribed it.

I remember pricing cyclogest though, and it's relatively cheap even for a private prescription, so you could should definitely ask your clinic and just pay for it at a pharmacy if it would make you feel better Smile.

Another big Congratulations!

I too was prescribed Crinone until I was about 9 weeks. I was worried about stopping at this point but I was reassured by my Consultant this was perfectly adequate. I'm now almost 12 weeks and everything seems to be progressing well.

4 weeks worth of Crinone was about £35, so I'm sure if you really want to continue with it, they won't really have any issue. I was quite glad to be done with it though to be honest.

Best of luck with the rest of your pregnancy - you've come a long way to get your BFP so if you really want the progesterone I'd insist upon it.

Thanks all, so much, for taking the time to get back to me on this. Like some of you, I'm on cyclogest. How odd that Guy's only recommend it for 8 weeks then. I am keen to stay on it for at least a couple of weeks behind that, and seeing as I'm paying for it don't see why it should be an issue - might be a job convincing my GP of that though! Hmm

Congrats to all of you on your DCs and pregnancies Smile

Koolforcats - congratulations! We must be on the same cycle as I've just had a BFP and I'm with Guys too... They said to take it until the first scan and my scan is at 7 weeks. I had to pay for the 4 weeks post the BFP though (just a normal prescription charge).... Can't wait for it to finish actually, this is my 2nd and I'd forgotten about all the mess. Yuck!

Good luck with everything!

Until the end of my first trimester (which I took as 13 weeks) here. Cyclogest 3 x a day as a couple of bleeds

Chelly81 congratulations! And what a coincidence! I'm on another regular MN ivf thread and there are a few of us there at Guys, so I'm forever wondering if I was sitting next to people in the waiting room who I 'knew' on MN! My scan is at 7 weeks too. I totally agree, it's pretty yuck, but I had a miscarriage last year and so just want to do all I can. I'm totally happy to pay for it, it's just whether anyone will prescribe it to me!
