Swollen Eyeball?!

Hi ladies

The last few mornings I've woken up with a very swollen eyeball on one side. It's very strange - it almost looks like a giant "eye bogey" on it but when you touch it, it's actually under the surface of the eyeball. It's clear, not red at all and usually gets smaller over a couple of hours then is completely gone by lunchtime!

Has anyone else had this or even heard of it?? Am not rushing off to the docs just yet as I can never normally get a morning appt and as I said, it's gone within a few hours :/

Hi Ria I'm not sure what your symptoms are but I think it is definietly best that you get it checked out. If you have trouble getting an appointment with GP there are a couple of other options - firstly do you have an eye A&E near you? There is Moorfields in London and a couple of others that you can rock up to and get assessed by an opthalmologist. You can also go to local optician and ask them to see.

Thanks benne! I am currently waiting for a callback from my gp - our local eye specialist hospital (queen mary's, Sidcup) is now closed I believe :/

I just tried to phone my midwife tho and apparently she's only there on a Wednesday and the midwife closes at 2pm! Wooonderful!!!!

On my babycentre app it says water retention can change the shape of your eyeballs so contact lenses can be awkward to wear. Maybe it's this?! If your concerned see your gp/optometrist

Have seen the doctor who has sent me for bloods... she thinks it's allergy but I'm not sure what I could be allergic to in my bed?!? She said next time it happens I have to get an emergency appointment or go straight to a&e so someone can see the actual swelling... I couldn't quite make get understand that it's gone in an hour or two so waiting to see a doc or someone in a&e is pretty pointless as it will be gone by then!!

Frustrating... let's see if the bloods show anything up tho sad

I think the doctor will find it very difficult to fully assess what is happening if it isn't present when you see them. Also GPs are not eye experts - attend the eye A&E and explain the situation and someone should see you quite quickly/ alternatively go to the optician when it is happening and they will be able to write down exactly what is happening in opthalmological speak which you can then take to tht doctors. I know its annoying but drs are only human and can't guess what is happening if they can't actually see it - especially with eyes.

Get yourself to an optician... They will probably be more helpful than you think. It's not an accident or an emergency ad you will probably find yourself waiting ages just for a doctor to give you an eyewash. I've had similar and it's always been a foreign body (grit etc..) and an eye wash has always sorted it.

It really does sound like a foreign body to me... Blood test?! Not sure I see the point in that at all.

MissRee Tue 26-Jul-11 11:02:26

With no itching, soreness or redness and also the fact that it is only there when I first wake up, i really don't think it's a foreign body.

Our local eye hospital is miles away. Optician could be a good bet but if I'm up at 7 and they dont open til 9, the swelling has usually gone by then.

It's not the actual swelling I'm worried about as thats gone in a few hours - I'm more concerned that it's a small symptom of something bigger.

Still sounds like a potential foreign body (tiny, tiny bit if grit). You don't blink at night and it could be irritating you but when you're awake a blinking your eye is more lubricated. Have you used any eye drops at all or a bath?

MissRee Wed 27-Jul-11 20:46:06

The GP prescribed eye drops but the morons in boots gave my prescription to someone else this morning so now I have to wait til tomorrow to get more!

I'm not having much luck with this...

sad oh dear.

Fingers crossed someone will get to the bottom of it soon.
