Pregnancy

Doctor thinks pregnant, I think maybe ovarian cyst! Why does it take so long to find out?

I started a thread on here because although I had a light period 3 weeks ago, I have been feeling pregnant for almost four weeks:

Lower backpain
stabbing pains on right side (this and the above lasted a week after light period)
queasiness
metallic taste
dizziness
increased need to wee
hungry
number 2 a few times a day which normally happens during pregnancy
raised temp
spotty

since this week I have been feeling so bloated that I looked pregnant and I am aware of something in my belly especially on my right side.

I have now done three negative pregnancy tests so I do not think I am pregnant but have read about ovarian cysts and know they can cause you to have pregnancy symptom so I feel maybe I have one.

I have been feeling queasy with a metallic taste and dizzy spells and needing to wee for the last three weeks and now I look pregnant. I have been asked if I am and my little girl commented on my tummy. I am sick of feeling like this and if I have a cyst I want it out so I can feel normal.

I saw my go today and she thinks I am pregnant but could not test me, she asked me to test one more time today and can you beleive it but my digital clear blue did not work, i had throw the box away and a little pic of a book came up.

Gp said to test one more time and she has put me down to get scanned but said it takes 6 weeks. I an going to be massive by then! If my belly has grown in a week!!! I am also have a hcg blood test on Monday.

I can not beleive I have to wait 6 weeks to see if i have cyst. She said she does not think its a cyst because i do not have the sharp pains anymore. I just get the odd niggling pain.

Its the queasiness and metallci taste that is getting me down.

Anyone experience this?

I was not sure where to post this so sorry if wrong place.

Thank you x

I did have an ovarian cyst whilst pregnant, it was a long time ago in the days when the Dr. tested you at about 3 months, x

hello
do you remember if you were aware of something on the right side of your tummy? it must have been massive at 3 months? did it go away by itself?

Surely it can't take 6 weeks. If you have had pain and bleeding in a known pregnancy there is a likelyhood you would be referred for an early scan. They can't see heartbeat til about 6 weeks from LMP though- maybe your doctor thought your bleeding was a period but maybe it was implantation bleed or other. weird no bfp though. In another week preg. tests should really be showing sth if LMP was 3 weeks ago.

can you call the hospital department and see if they have you booked in or at least received the gp referal? and while on phone ask their advice/see if they can bring app. forward. If more pain/bleeding go straight back to doctor or better a and e and they will probably scan you asap.

I had my cyst surgically removed as it twisted, it was the size of a grapefruit, these days they will be able to see it easily on a scan, if there is a chance that you are pregnant I think your Dr. should send you to the epu for a check, x

OK, so you are sure you're not pg but the dr thinks you are? In which case I would play pg, contact the EPU (if there is one near you) and ask for a scan. That should sort it.

I would be tempted to call epu myself... Maybe when pain/niggles are at it's worse especially if located on a specific side. I too had cysts with all pgs and before. I got v painful localised pain and each time they thought ectopic.
I was told if I'm v aware of my body, ie get ovulation pains, I'd be more susceptible to feeling the pain of a cyst.

thank you for your replies. i am tempted to call the epu unit but will they check me when I no longer have these sharp pains?

but i could say to them that my gp thinks i am pregnant, having hcg blood test on monday as home tests keep saying neg but i am worried i am having ectopic or i've got a growing cyst with the pregnancy as i am aware of something on my right side, my belly has grown in a week, i have constant pregnancy symptoms inc dizziness, queasiness and metallic taste. But they might say to wait and see what happens with my blood test and if my gp has referred me then they must feel its is not urgent yet as I have no constant pain or bleeding.

Boosaphena - i know what you mean I am too and can always tell when I am ovualting but this month I have not noticed the usual signs, I normally get the jelly discharge and I've not, its been creamy or dry all month which I know is another pregnancy sign. i am just aware of something inside especially on my right I was convinced that my gp would feel it but she said she couldnt.

I only had the normal pregnancy symptoms and there is quite a lot of room in your abdo, I suffer from IBS and do have pain in my left side and bad bloating, nausea, my Dr. couldnt feel anything when he examined me, I am too old to be pregnant now but certainly look it !

Apart from the negative tests is there any other reason that you think you might not be pregnant? (eg no intercourse in the last two months).

If your gp felt your tummy, he would have a good idea if the uterus was enlarged and soft. So if he thought that you were after feeling your tummy, then there is a good chance that you are actually pregnant.

Both my mum and sister each had pregnancies where they never got a positive pregnancy test. My sisters was confirmed at 4 months with a scan.

It is possible to have an ovarian cyst and it is very common in pregnancy.

My only concern would be that ectopic pregnancies are also prone to giving negative pregnancy tests too. So do watch out for signs of an ectopic and go straight to A&E if you think it is possible.

I hope you get answers soon, and do try the EPU if you can't wait, tell them about the one sided pain and your gp saying you are pregnant, and they will be more likely to scan you.

Hope you get answers soon.

Tbh I would just say that the gp thinks you're pregnant and you've been having some pains so you wanted to get checked out in case of ectopic etc. Don't even mention the cyst, they'll see it if it's there. If gp thinks you're pg then go along with it.

Thank you, I have bought one last test so will use tomorrow mornings wee.

I think even if its comes up positive I am going to call the epu unit because of being aware of something on the right side of my abdomen.

If I just had a test to show them I would feel better. I keep thinking what would happen if they brought me in and nothing showed up at all, cyst or pregnancy. I would feel like such a fool for wasting their time. But surely I can not imagine all these symptoms up.

OP I don't know if this is helpful, but I had an ovarian cyst a few years ago which wasn't picked up until it was the size of a 3-4 month foetus. I had a contraceptive implant and wasn't getting periods anyway, so I had no inkling that anything was wrong. I was completely asymptomatic (and had been pregnant before, so probably would have known). I only found out because I went to be fitted for a diaphragm, the doctor felt my uterus (I think?), and said I felt about 3 months pg. i did a negative test, they sent me for an US the next day, it was a cyst. And big enough that I had to have a proper full operation, a laporomty, not keyhole surgery. Weeks recovering, in fact.

So a) an ovarian cyst can be asymptomatic whereas you're describing preg symptoms but b) given that the size of my cyst meant a 4 day stay in hospital and 3 (?) weeks off work, I am appalled that they aren't giving you a quicker referral, because if it's a cyst, you need to get it before it grows more, it could be the difference between a major op like mine, or a keyhole day surgery.

Thank you for the message, I was going to wait until the morning to do my last test but did it tonight and the test did not work, the 2nd clear blue in two weeks to not work. I am not buying anymore. The test window did not get a line. I'm having a hcg test in the morning anyway (not sure how long it takes to get results) so if this comes neg then I am going to push hard to get my scan early.

I really do feel a bit stressed tonight because I am so aware of something on my right side, I just can not imagine this is due to a pregnancy. I never had feelings like that in my three pregnancies. I have to go to the hospital for my blood tests tomorrow anyway so do you think if I went into the epu unit and told them my gp thinks I am pregnant and I have these pains and sensations on my right they would scan me?

Yes I think so because with early poss pregnancy their focus is on your health making sure not ectopic or molar, I would go and make a fuss.

Our EPU won't take self-referrals and require a GP letter, fax or call. They require pregnancy to be confirmed usually by urine or blood tests.

A blood HCG test will have results back within 24-48 hours.

Hope you get some answers soon.

Is there anywhere you can get a private scan done? There is a place near me which is £50 and I think its worth it for the sake of your health.

Good luck with the blood test. I too would have been worried about an ectopic.

If you start getting any more pain or bleeding, take yourself along to A&E. If appropriate, they can refer you to EPU for scans/testing.

Good luck with your test today. I'm 7+4 and had a scan last week due to sharp stabbing pains on my right side, bad enough for me to go to hospital. They wanted to rule out ectopic pregnancy. Baby was fine, in the right place but the stabbing pains were caused by a UTI. So try not to think the worst. Good luck x

hello, so went for hcg blood test and after went into the epu unit. like someone said they would not see me without referral or fax from gp. called my surgery to see if one of the two docs who has seen and thinks I am pregnant was in and both off Shock!

last night I had an uncomfortable sleep, i could constantly feel something on my right side, like a pressure. if i lay on left i felt it pushing against my insides so it took me ages to fall asleep. I can feel it too when i lean forward and need to sit straight. but i am aware of it all the time. i also had a few niggly pains that went across my belly.

so after the epu unit said no, i just thought i would look in a&e and if its not busy just see what they say. lucky it was almost empty and i really expected the reception woman to not take me seriously but she was so lovely and made me feel ok about it.

i was there for a few hours, got prodded and doc said she could definitelty feel something on my right where I said. she took another blood test to test a few things including infections, inflamed appendix etc. the results were all clear and my hcg came back negative. she said for pregnancy it has to be 5 and mine was 1.

she also agrees with me that it sounds like an ovarian cyst - so what would they not just scan me????????????????????? she said i needed to go back to gp tomorrow with her letter to see if they can speed the scan up. whatever is in tere has grown since last week, my tummy is bigger and i can feel it all the time. surely that should be enough?

You must be exhausted - sounds like a very trying day. At least you have mode some progress and can go back to the GP with some definite information.

Good luck.

I was just so glad when she said she could feel something, I was starting to wonder if I was going mad! But I just wish they could have scanned me there and then to get to the end of this.
