This is a little bit confusing, so I apologize in advance.

I found out I was pregnant, it was abit of a shock but coming round to the idea.

On the 19th June I had lots of pains in my back and tummy, so to rule out an eptopic I was scanned. The baby was fine had a really strong hb and every thing was fine. I thought I was around 11wks but was dated at 9 exactly, i figured being out by 2 weeks was fine as i wasn't sure on my dates anyway.

So yesterday was my 12wk scan. The sonographer scanned me, looked at my notes, assured me the baby was fine, had a strong hb could see the cord and everything was fine...but she could only date me as 9+1

She's booked me in for another scan I'm 3 weeks for a 12wk scan and assured me the baby was healthy just not as far on as we thought and the previous scan must have been wrong.

I'm really worried because I've been through the calander and the week they are suggesting I concieved is impossible dh was away the week before during and after. But we did have unprotected sex several times in the week to make me 12wk now.

Why hasn't my baby grown? What does this mean? Should I be prepaid to loose this baby :( I was just getting excited.

BTW I have 8mo dd so no time to play away! Grin

And could I really be 5 weeks wrong? That's a whole cycle I would've missed. I'm just so confused and don't have a mw or consultant appointment booked for 5 more weeks.

Could you afford to pay for another scan to put your mind at rest? They are about £90 I believe.

Good luck, hope you're OK.

We probably could do, but to be honest, I wouldn't know where to even begin getting a private scan [hconfused]

did you have a positive pregnancy test at any point? (to help work out dates) it does sound really odd to have been off by 5 weeks, and for no growth in two weeks yet a strong heartbeat.

also, did you get print-outs of the measurements at the first (or second) scan? there are some helpful web sites that give guidelines on development.

I got a bfp when I thought I was 8 so according to 1st scan would have been 6 but according to yesterdays scan would have been 3 (1 week past conception!?) Pg tests have always been really week for me and I've always had to hold it up to the light to see a positive untill around the12wk mark when they get stronger. But this one was really strong came up instantly, dh was shocked at how strong the line was. So I'm having trouble believing I would have been just 3 weeks pg.

I did have a print out from both scans but they aren't in my hand held notes but my consultant notes at the hospital.

Do you have contact details for your midwife? They might be able to put your mind at ease if there might be 'non-worrying' reasons for the measurements appearing small. Or they may be able to get you an earlier scan for your reassurance.

If you google you will find quite a few places that offer private scans, assuming you live near a big city.

Maybe if you explain to the mw that the dates the have for you now can't be right as your partner was away and your worried she might beable to book another scan, they put me back two weeks which I didn't think could be right, it wasn't till 20 weeks, that the baby started measuring what I thought he was, ( three weeks ahead of the date they gave me)

I just want add in that if you have a tilted or retroverted uterus it is very easy for early scans to measure two weeks behind. (See the misdiagnosed miscarriage website). Also early scans themselves are +/- 7 days in accuracy. A slight bit of mismeasurement in the early scans makes a huge difference in terms of sizing. This is why they don't do dating scans until 13 weeks. Once the uterus comes up out of the pelvis, it ensures that it is no longer tilted and it also means that the sizes are slightly easier to measure. Even at the dating scan, unless the measurements are out by more than a week they will not move a due date, for precisely the inaccuracy that can occur.

I would agree that you dates do sound a bit out, but remember factors come into play such as that sperm can theoretically live for upto 7 days, so you could have ovulated and concieved a week after your dh had to go away, so that might only make you 11 weeks pregnant now, and with a tilted uterus, you could measure only 9. (perhaps the previous scan was more accurate!) One thing I know is that early scans are totally unreliable for dating. It is good that your babies heartbeat is still strong, focus on this and try to wait for a couple of weeks before going for another scan if you can, once you think your uterus is above the pelvic rim (midwife will be able to tell you this), then a private scan might put your mind at rest.

Wishing you all the best for this pregnancy.

I don't think I have a tilted or retroverted uterus, I do have a septate uterus, but that isn't causing any problems. I have another scan booked for the 28th of this month and they will date me from that.

I'm trying to stay positive and I accept I could be 1-3 weeks out on my dates but 5 is a whole cycle I would have missed.

You are filling me with hope, its a bit heart sinking to hear you have to be pregnant for 3 more weeks! (i don't enjoy pg its a means to an end for me!)
