Q for those who had lots of bleeds when PG...

RickGhastley · 30/06/2011 08:49

I'm almost 9 weeks pg and so far have had 3 bleeds with slight cramping. I went to my GP and got referred for scans after the 1st 2 bleeds, all was well. I am due to see my GP this afternoon for another referral after the 3rd (heavy) bleed yesterday. I seem to be spending all my time at the GP or EPU at he mo!

Those of you who had frequent bleeds, did you always have a scan afterwards?

And did you ever find out what was causing the bleeds? The sonographer did a v detailled scan and is mystified!

Thanks x

Sounds similar to my experience (and I'm currently 18 weeks). Pretty much, yes unless the bleeding was just spotting and/or had not stopped after 24 hours. It's really frustrating isn't it because each visit is a bit of an emotional rollercoaster. I also never found out what caused my bleeds in early PG - no cervical erosion, no blood ever seen in the uterus... everyone drew a blank and just said that I was a bleeder :) I had bleeds like this up until 13+5 weeks.

Wishing you all the best for the rest of your PG x

Hi bigmac, thanks for posting, that is really reassuring!

Rollercoaster is exactly right, on Monday I thought I was having a m/c, scan showed a healthy baby Smile then i had a huge red bleed for an hour or so on Tuesday eve and no bleeding since - wtf is going on?!

Glad to hear that your bleeds have stopped, that must be a relief!

I had really heavy bleeding and was loosing clotts up till 24 weeks , I always had a scan. They didn't know the cause at the time but after he was born had to go to surgery to have placenta removed, apparently it was a really odd shape which could have been the cause

Help I started bleeding Tuesday following small bleed one and half weeks ago. I had scan yesterday shows sac and bleed in womb. They told me nothing and sent me home to wait for scan Monday. My bleeding just like a proper period whereas earlier one post coital very short. Mild cramps. Am I mis carrying? This is so awful so sorry for everyone experiencing it. Still have two yr old to stay bright for when want to go to bed and cry.

Hi RickGastly,

I'm pregnant with my first. I had light bleeding at 5, 8 and 13 weeks. As it happened I had scans after each one. The first one was at EPU, second I'd already booked a private scan and third happened just before 12 week scan. I felt reassured every time I had a scan. I'm now 15 weeks and all seems to be ok.

I'm glad I had the scans but they never found out the reason as to why. They said it just happens to some women.

I hope everything is ok and will be thinking of you at this difficult time. Keep us posted :)

Hi kara and littlepic - glad to hear your pgs went well or are going well ! I'd never heard of bleeding during pg before except if it ended in m/c. I'm super paraniod aswell after having a m/c in Feb. It's so good to hear that bleeding may not be a problem!

Ginga I'm sorry to hear that you are having such a worry. How many weeks pg are you? Did the scan you had show a baby that was the right size for dates? I keeep my fingers crossed for you on Monday x

I didn't have a scan after the first big bleed as I assumed it was a period and didn't know I was pregnant. Did after the second, as I'd done a test and was surprised to get a BFP - dated embryo at around 5-6 weeks. Went back 2 weeks later for follow up scan, which was fine and they found heartbeat, but the day after the scan I had a huge bleed in a big gush, with clots (tmi) but as it tailed off quickly they wouldn't scan me again until the normal 12 week scan. Kept bleeding to some extent until 11 weeks, which was very stressful as I had a mc late last year.

They did find the cause though - an area of haemmorage on my uterus wall. It was bigger than the embryo at the 5 week scan but had shrunk by 7 weeks, and disappeared by 12 weeks. Apparently it's a bit like a graze, and big bleeds occur when the scab comes off, I suppose a bit like when you graze your knee. I'm now 23 weeks and all is looking good so far.

Good luck with your pregnancy. Smile

Yay another success story from cattleprod!

I went to see my GP today but it was a locum Dr. She refused to refer me for a scan as everything had been ok when I was last scanned (Monday) plus the bleeding had stopped fairly quickly and no clots were passed. She told me to relax because being worried won't help the baby. I nearly punched her in the head.

Smile

Seeing midwife on Monday so will discuss with her. I'm actually quite relieved that I don't have to traipse up to the EPU.

Good luck with it all Rick - if a GP says something like that again, you could point out what my EPU nurse said - every scan is only as good as the time you have it. Although bleeding is awful, my lovely EPU nurse said that unless you are soaking a pad, have clots or it isn't spotting that doesn't ease up quickly and within 24 hours to brown blood (eg old blood)/discharge (TMI) then don't panic. Easier said than done of course. I've also heard of lots of people who had period style bleeding for weeks and weeks and are now harrassed parents :) That's what makes it so hard I guess - everyone is so different. Hope you have a good meeting with the MW.

Ginga fingers crossed for you on Monday - the wait is horrid I know so make sure you get plenty of TLC and cuddles of your little one.

I had bleeding with both my first pregnancies.

DD1 is now a very active 5 year old who finished P1 today. With her I had bleeding at 11 weeks, a couple of days in a row. No reason was identified although I did have a low lying placenta that moved by a check scan at 32 ish weeks to make sure it was well out of the way for a natural delivery. I was signed off work for the rest of the week and told to rest. The bleeding stopped after about 3 days.

DD2 is 3.5 years old. I had a first bleed with her at 6 weeks which was put down to a implantation bleed. As it was so early all my GP could say check my cervix was closed, told me to go home and rest and to give me a referral for an 8 week scan to check if there was a heartbeat. Then at days before 12 weeks I had more bleeding this time the scan picked up a blood clot outside the sac that the baby was in. The sonographer estimated that there was approx. 10mls of blood in it and I would bleed for about 2 weeks as it gradually dissipated. She was spot on in her estimate.

Interestingly I didn't have bleeding in the first 12 weeks with my third pregnancy, which was a boy. And I am currently 15 weeks pregnant with no. 4 and again I didn't have bleeding in first 12 weeks - we don't care what the sex of this baby is.

Try not to worry, impossible I know, I have read a bit into it over the years and even read stories of ladies bleeding so heavily it was running down their legs but the baby was just fine. There are so many aspects of pregnancy and child birth that are stressful that we are blissfully unaware of before getting pregnant : )

Hi
I had bleeding on and off for the first 20wks of my first pregnancy (DD1 is now 4). Had brown bleeding sporadically for the first 8 weeks, then a largish red clotty bleed at 9 wks - I had a scan at the EPU and they identified the cause as a haemotoma (SP?) - if I remember rightly this is a bit like a blood blister. They predicted I'd get more brownish blood, which I did. Then at 11wks I had a huge, sudden red bleed - clothes soaked within minutes, rushed off in an ambulance etc - which was also a haematoma. I would never have believed it was possible to have something like that happen and the baby be fine, but she was. It's really horrible and frightening when it happens to you, I really feel sympathy with what you must be going through and hope that things turn out OK for you.

I had a scan every time... A ridiculous number of ultrasounds. My bleeds stopped at 16 weeks, thankfully. They didn't know what caused it but they could see the bleeds on the ultrasound. And said it was somewhere near the cervix. A friend of mine who is a Gynae oncologist (so right area, wrong field) said she thought some of the hormones produced during pregnancy can cause the lining of the cervix to erode and that may have been the reason (I don't know if this is true though).

I had bleeding up to about 14 weeks and had a healthy baby. I was in the US with private healthcare so plenty of scans but looked like it was a sub chorionic hematoma (sp?). Basically blood clots on the placenta that gravity drives out. Have had a few friends who also had similar in successful pregnancies. It is scary but after a few bleeds and a few scans was almost used to it.

I started bleeding very early on in my 2nd preg. I called Dr's & my lovely doctor actually came round to check on me. He said it looked like a miscarriage, but to wait until the next day for a scan. I remember sitting up crying until 4 in the morning as we had tried for a 2nd baby for nearly 5 years. I could not believe it at the scan the next day when they said everything looked fine. I had 3 further lots of very heavy bleeding over the next couple of months, the hospital were great & gave me a special 'get into hospital' free card. Which meant whenever I started to bleed I could pop along to the ward to be scanned & monitored. I think the bleeding stopped after about 4 months & I never found out what caused it. I now have a very healthy 8 year old daughter.

I too had never heard about bleeding whilst pregnant, but when I searched om Mumsnet I found loads of similar stories & it gave me hope - Good Luck.

Happy to see this thread, am 6 weeks ish and woke up to brown needing today (tmi!) Had nothing like that in my first pregnancy so thought it was a miscarraige, but now it's more or less stopped. Bit of an emotional rollercoaster though. Really relieved to find I'm not the only one.

Had three episodes of bleeding, last one at around 14 weeks, from then on everything was fine, textbook, no complications, birth went okay...

My (extremely FAST) bleeding was accompanied by MASSIVE, surprisingly hard clots. When they came out, I thought the worst. Each bleed was probably roughly around the time I'd have had a period - one theory suggested to me was that some people's bodies just can't quite get out of the habit of trying to menstruate. But who knows.

Whatever causes it, unexplained bleeding in early pregnancy does seem to be pretty common. More common than I'd have thought.

I had two major bleeds before I was 12 weeks, the first one soaked me through in minutes then stopped. I passed big clots with the second, plus a bleed to brown blood in the middle. They scanned me after the large ones and all was fine, no reason at all could be found. I had another bleed when I was 14 weeks that lasted just under 24 hours and didn't go to EPU with that one. Since then I've had my 20 week scan, all fine, and I'm now 23 weeks and haven't bled for 9 weeks, fingers crossed.
I was so surprised that the first wasn't a miscarriage, so much blood! But I was told it just happens to some people. Good luck!

I agree with MoChan, I have very heavy periods that then loiter on half heartedly for ages. It was a bit like in pregnancy my body couldn't quite bring itself to stop entirely!

I only twigged I was expecting DS2 at 16 weeks because I had monthly bleeds from when I stopped BFing DS1 and simply took them to be periods... Hmm.
I was scanned when the pregnancy was finally 'discovered' and all was well.
I had a big bleed at almost 26 weeks and Grade 4 placenta praevia was diagnosed shortly after. Whether that was the cause of the early pregnancy bleeds, I don't know.
I was admitted to hospital, had further big bleeds and DS2 was delivered by CS at 31 weeks weighing 1710g - spending a little bit of time on SCBU, he came home aged 5 weeks old, weighing 5 lbs. He is now 7 years and totally well Smile.

As there are so many reasons for why you might bleed in pregnany, nobody will be able to give you any real reassurance. Fingers crossed for you here.

Ginga, are you ok?? From what you are writing, you should maybe seek some medical advice and get checked tonight for your own safety xx.
