Hi
Thinking of TTC soon and I am finding that I am as afraid the second time as I was the first?

Biggest fear I think is getting proper sick this time (only nausea before) and the heartburn - which was truely hell and SPD returning.

What was different for you the second time? What did you forget about ?

:)

Im pregnant with my second (only 7 weeks) and so far only nausea, no being sick, same as first. Every pregnancy is different so theres no real way to know how it will go :/ Im def more hormonal though, cry at everything!

I had forgotten most things, despite only having a 22 month gap!
My biggest fear was actually the birth as I'd had it relatively easy 1st time round and didn't believe I would be lucky enough the second time too. I had heartburn both pregnancies but was better prepared the second time round so took it more in my stride.
Same with the nausea/sickness - I had less nausea 2nd time but threw up more, which was actually better!
The thing I found hardest was being very tired and not very mobile at the end of the second one: not like the first time around where I could just lie down when I wanted - my toddler put paid to that!

Not pg yet, but am worried about SPD returning with #2. I've heard it can kick in earlier the second time. And having a toddler to deal with at the same time! Eek.

Mine was quite different...

No sickness or nausea, no heartburn. Both of which I had a lot of with dd1.

DS is 22mo and I'm 28 weeks pregnant.

The biggest difference this time round is that I haven't been able to indulge myself as much because I've got a toddler to look after. With DS if I felt really sick I could avoid foody smells and feel sorry for myself on the sofa, this time round I had to face food because DS needed his meals still. If I felt tired some days I would get out my side of the bed, walk round the bottom of the bed, and get back in on DH's side, not so this time because toddlers just don't buy into that!

I was slightly sicker this time but it's not a given as every pregnancy is different, being sick was an experience with DS trying to shut the toilet lid on my head.

For all it is slightly more tiring growing a baby while looking after a little one it's not altogether horrendous. DS will happily play on the floor with his cars or crayons so I do get chance to pop my feet up then and he's old enough for soft play so I take him there and turn him loose while I have a sit down and watch him. I've been able to reuse a lot of my baby things from him even though I'm having a girl this time. It's also helped DS learn a few valuable lessons, I can't carry him much nowadays so he's walking more and is more willing to sit in his buggy because he knows a carry is off the cards. It's a small thing and would have come in it's own time anyway but it's happened sooner because he knows it's a case of "I can't carry you" rather than "I won't carry you" which I think has made it easier for him.

I'd forgotten about skin tags (yuck) and how a craving is more of an all consuming compulsion rather than just mildly fancying whatever it is.

DS is 22 months and I'm 18 weeks pregnant. I bled on and off with DS from 7 weeks to 34 weeks which was worrying and meant lots of hospital trips and extra scans, I've not had anything at all this time. Other differences are not feeling so tired this time round and also not had any heartburn (yet) which I really suffered with first time around.

I am on my 3rd pregnancy with a stupidly small gap between pregnancies and there are still things I have forgotten. Like jumping out of bed in the middle of the night with calf cramp.

My 1st was Consultant led, 2nd was midwife led, 3rd is shared care.

Didn't get heartburn with 1st, got it bad with 2nd, haven't had any yet with this one.

The difference for me was having a mc in between which was physically very traumatic (ambulance, 2 nights in hospital, operation etc), and then heavy bleeding throughout the first trimester.

The contrast between being completely relaxed and happy and being able to work full time in the first pregnancy, and being anxious, depressed, pessimistic, catastrophising every slight niggle, barely functioning etc this time has been quite extreme. It's only now after the 21 week scan that I'm starting to believe that everything might turn out ok.

DD is 24 months, am 23 weeks pregnant with DC2.

On balance I think my second pregnancy has been easier. With DD I was off work for 7 weeks in the first trimester, throwing up. Never "bloomed", just had periods of not feeling quite so awful. Terrible heartburn etc in third trimester.

This time the first trimester was still quite grim, but not so bad, was only signed off for three weeks. Knew to get the drugs pronto!

Actually felt "good" from about week 16 to very recently, but just in the last few days think I am turning the corner again into feeling knackered all the time!

Am only working three days a week this time round, and I find doing this plus two days of toddler on balance to be easier than trying to work full time last time round.

Last time the time dragged and I was so introverted/obsessed about the pregnancy. Having DD this time has taken me out of myself more and it feels like its all happening more quickly.

The acid reflux is kicking in again but once again second time round you know what to expect and am now on the omeprazole and the gaviscon which is controlling it. Last time I suffered for several weeks before making it to the doctor.

Warning, if you're anything like me and lots of other women, you'll be shocked how quickly you get huge! I have been huge since week 15 and look like I'm due any day. People can't believe i still have four whole months to go! Baby isn't particularly big, I just think everything goes "flop" once you've done it before!

PS in terms of what I forgot, I think it was just how down and yuk you feel in the first trimester. At least this time round though I knew it would improve after three months or so.

My 2nd pregnancy ( am 36+4 ) is not much different to 1st with DD who is 2.6, except the tiredness which again is prob not much diff only the fact that you cant cat nap when you want unlike first time round Smile

Also being totally honest you dont seem to get excited about every move and kick, some days i have to lay and poke bump to get a kick back because i havent notice many through the day

My second pg was much easier than my first. Much less morning sickness, no SPD (I was on crutches first time round, not even a twinge 2nd time!), less heartburn, easier to sleep (probably due to being knackered by toddler DD1!).

This time (DC3) has been so far totally in between the two!

With DS I was totally wiped out for the whole 9 months, but then I was working very long hours and playing hard when I fell pregnant (unplanned, naughty me) and then went back home to the otherside of the world at 5 months, so had massive jet lag too.

This time wasn't working and haven't flown anywhere in a couple of years. I still get tired, but not like the first time around.

The morning sickness was as bad both time around, though I'm able to clean my teeth most days since ms eased off this time, where as first time couldn't clean my teeth at all without gag reflex kicking in (yuck on all counts!).

I think the biggest difference has been the cravings. With DS I HAD to have chocolate all the fecking time. This time I've craved everything from pineapple to hummous. This week it's ham sandwichs!

Oh and I didn't have SPD first time round, so it's been really fun running after a preschooler with limited mobility!

Actually so many things are different this time I'm wondering if it's a girl. Will find out in a few days thankfully Grin

I am 22 weeks with DC2 and DD is 16 months. I had also forgotten about the skin tags (which I really hate) and the spontaneous calf cramps in the middle of the night.

With DD I was sick from start to finish, but this time it stopped at 17 weeks. My back is a killer this time (probably also from carrying DD around) and I am absolutely bone tired. I know that I wasn't this tired with DD.

The biggest thing for me though is that this time I am terrified of childbirth whereas last time I was blissfully ignorants.

brightcopperkettles · 20/06/2011 13:09

or just ignorant maybe, don't believe it was plural last time Wink.

My two DDs are 4.5 years apart - had nausea til about 12 weeks both times.

Having said that, I did get fainting episodes second time round (normal, but unpleasant) and felt a LOT more tired. I also kept getting very sharp pains in my hip/groin which made it hard to walk during the last trimester. I remember thinking I don't want to do this again!

With my first, the pg was fine til baout 25 weeks when I had a bleed (turned out to be nothing much). I then had BP problems in the last trimester which meant regular trips to the Day Unit.

I would say pg2 was more straightforward, but harder work!

I am currently 21 weeks pregnant with dc2. The main difference this time round is the fear!!
During my first pregnancy i had no worries and expected to have a bumper baby around my due date with no problems. I developed pre-eclampsia around 32 weeks that went undiagnosed until 34 weeks, was hospitalised for a week then induced. Gave birth to my gorgeous dd who was 3lb12oz and had to spend 2 weeks in special care. After the birth followed a PPH of 3 litres and me in intensive care for 3 days.
So this time round i see horror stories everywhere and always think the worst and am constantly worrying about what could go wrong.
Hopefully things will be fine this time around!!!

Thanks everyone thses are really interesting.

Does anyone ever actually bloom in pregnancy? I just cant imagine how that happens!?

Cattleprod- Im sorry about your mc and traumatic 1st trimester- wishing you lots of luck with the final few months.

I am not sure if am re-assured or more afraid now! The common factor is that no pregnancy is the same !

I know I loathed being pregnant last time, so no idea why I am so excited about doing it again (abeilt a bit afraid!)

Currently 7 wk pg with DC2.

The main difference is the worry as I had a m/c 4 months ago and am convinced this one will go the same way, I never worried at all with DS1 (naive!)

I am also more nauseous but not as tired, probably cos I'm working part time (was f/t before DS1) and I'm better at resting than I was 4 years ago.

My 2nd pregnancy was pretty similar to my first. No sickness either time, just nausea.

My labours were completely different though! 2nd was far far shorter and much less painful!
