Why is midwife asking me to go to extra appts?

I am 17 weeks pregnant and had a 16 week appt with a consultant.

My midwife has phoned me and asked me to go in for an appt next week. I said that I didn't think I needed an appt until 28 weeks (as this is not my first pregnancy and also the schedule set out in my notes is 12,16,28,34, 36,38,41.)
She said that they do like to see people at 16 weeks even if they've been to a hospital appt (as the hospital don't always do all the correct checks?) and also said that they may see me at 22/23 weeks as well.

Is it usual to see a MW as well as a consultant around 16 wks? I thought the NHS are meant to be stretched!! Am now a bit worried that she has the result of some test that she wants to discuss with me?!

Can I ask why your under consultant as that maybe why you need to see MW more.

I'm under consultant and they seem to run independently so I see the midwives regardless of when I see the consultant.

I went to see the consultant as I had had previous problems with blood clotting, and the midwife thought I might need blood thinners. The consultant has decided I don't need them (at least not until after the birth) and so has discharged me back to the midwives. So I don't think it can have anything to do with that.

I guess I will find out next week - just worried it's something to do with test results (though have had results back for the Downs risk and I know that was fine).

I am 22 weeks tomorrow and had my '22 week app' yesterday with midwife.
My notes also said appointments at 8, 12, 16, 22 then 28weeks and so on but midwife said she wants to see me back there in 4 weeks so have now got app. for 26 weeks not sure why as she did not tell me!

Sorry no help whatsoever but just wanted to let you know you are not the only one.
Oh and this is dc2 for me so thought i was meant to see madwife less this time??

IME if there's a major problem with results they let you know straight away so I don't think you need to worry. I don't think my MW is all that happy with the reduced number of appointments on the new schedule (although she's following it) so perhaps your MW just feels she has the time and is happier seeing you more regularly.

Ok its my 1st but so far its as uncomplicated / striaght forward as it gets.

I dont mind though, i like seeing them regularly and id rather see them often, than hardly at all, like so many other mums to be that I know.

IIRC I had a couple of 'overlapping' midwife & consultant appts. I saw the consultant in my first pregnancy as I was underweight and second time round as I had a EMCS first time. Some of the appts were in the same week.

I was quite happy to be seen a little more often .

I had a 16 week midwife appointment and also had one around that time with the consultant. I then had had to see my doctor at 24 weeks, and I will see the midwife again at 28 weeks. I will also be seeing the consultant at 28 weeks - I think the consultant appointments are classes as additional.
I am sure it's normal and there is nothing to worry about. Hope this helps!

I'm being seen by my midwife more often than the schedule set out in my notes. There are a couple of issues I have brought up in our appointments that she has said she would like to see me more often.

I think this is a positive thing... I think the schedule is only a suggestion. And, OP, if you are under a consultant as well, I'm sure she only wants to see you more regularly to make sure you are both up to speed on what the consultant has said.

Sounds like you have moved from consultant-led-care to midwife-led-care, thus you will have less appointments with your consultant and more with your midwife. Simples.

I am shared care.

I had appointment with consultant at 16 weeks and was told to see community midwife at 25 weeks and hospital midwife at 28 weeks. Next CM appointment is 32 unless hospital say sooner. My midwife told me she fits in around them.

But as someone said earlier it does depend on reason for Consultant led care.

Thanks everyone, sounds like it's probably nothing to do with any nasty test results that I am imagining (!), and I agree that it is better to have more appts than not enough!
