Pregnancy

Newly pregnant but some concerns...

I'm writing on behalf of my wife as she's so tired she's gone to bed already. We've been trying to conceive for 3 1/2 years and had a failed cycle of IVF in April 2011. Incredibly we've managed to conceive naturally this month, we're 5 weeks tomorrow and have our visit to the GP for confirmation. My wife has just developed a cold ( I'm blaming a wet and cold Manchester and a Take That concert for that) anyway what pain relief (for a headache) can she take during the early stages of pregnancy, is paracetamol ok? Also she's commented on having some white-ish discharge and is obviously concerned, anybody out there got any ideas what this might be and whether we should be concerned.

Hi I'm 5 weeks too and this is my second baby. Discharge is totally normal expect her nose to get blocked etc too as it's like your body goes into mucus overload. Prob trying to make a plug for the cervix!

Paracetamol is fine but if your worried talk to the gp when you get confirmation etc. There are threads on the antenatal boards your wife can join for support.

And many many congrats, I know ivf failure must have been heart wrenching so what a lovely longed for surprise.

i think it is ibuprofen you need to steer clear of. In any case it should say on the back of the packet. Or dare I say it....google?

Discharge completely normal Grin

Nothing to be concerned about. Don't worry - all normal. Personally, once I knew I was pregnant I never took any prescription drugs unless I had to, but it's a matter of choice. (I was always very cautious)

Congratulations! Smile

Thanks for that, surpise, delight, excitement it's unbelivable we'd almost given up hope of conceiving naturally in fact we had an appointment at the hospital for another round of IVF already booked. We're just so relieved and overwhelming happy too. I fear though that with wanting something so much for so long that we'll now enter into a kind of neurotic mode and become obsessed with harming the foetus by our ignorance which is mad I know because, as I hear so much, women have been doing this for thousands of years, without the kind of information we've got at our fingertips.

Congratulations :) I agree paracetamol is fine, and could be useful to help keep her body temperature down if she has a fevour. I've heard that colds are very common in early pg as it's your body busy on other tasks instead of your immune system, which is surpressed to allow good implantation (not sure if that is true)

If you're at all worried you could ring a pharmacist, Boots pharmacists are good and will if not busy come on the phone for a chat. I had a question about Vicks and my midwife told me to ring them - just might be worth keeping in mind for future reference (the answer was 'no' to Vicks, just plain old steam only)

It's only natural to be worried, especially after such a journey, I worry about the silliest things Blush
