Pregnancy

only managing to eat rubbish food - first tri

Pre pregnancy I was reasonably healthy, probably ate a little too much chocolate/ice cream etc and not enough wholegrains but apart from that I was doing pretty well.
Since about 6 weeks pg though I've been feeling really nausaeus, and the only types of food I can really stomach are "bad" ones! I am craving (and have given in lots) bacon sandwiches, crisps, super noodles, ice cream.
I have gone off fruit and veg - I make myself drink a fruit smoothie every moring but cannot stomach whole fruit, and try and eat as much veg as I can manage with dinner but it's not a lot.

Am I going to harm my baby? I am not eating that much quantity wise (10 weeks pg now and only weigh 2 lbs more than pre pregnancy) but it's just the quality. I am taking my vitamins. Is this something that will go in the second tri? Why am I craving so much rubbish?

with morning sickness you need to eat anything you can ather than worrying. I was the same in first trimester and lived on peanut butter sandwiches and corned beef sandwiches. the baby will be fine.
i was extremely healthy pre preg as i waas on strict diet. once you lose the nausea you will be better but cravings might continue.

Hey

in my first trimester i did a month where i ate NO fruit / veg in ANY form. Shock

In a block of 3 weeks i only had 1 "meal"

I have always been really extra healthy, and pretty much, i ate chips / crisps / chocolate bars / biscuits. and drank (1 drink at a time for 24 - 48 hours per drink, coke, dr pepper, lucozade, tango, nasty squashes with aspartane in etc etc)

I did have HG, and was very very very sick (and ended up in hospital with it) but all the drs / midwives couldnt care less that i ate nothing / only junk.

I also switched from preg vits backs to folic acid at 7 weeks, then from 8 weeks no folic acid either, (as it made me sick and it was an uphill battle keeping hydrated so making myself sick by taking tablets (that id vomit and not benefit at all from anyway was pointless)

Dont worry about it. It is not ususual to only eat junk in the 1st trimester, baby WILL be fine, and even the midwives were not bothered when i gave up folic acid at 8 weeks as i had had it for 5 months before getting pregnant.

I started to eat better from around 16 weeks

am 26 weeks now and despite anti-sick tablets, still vomiting, but hey ho, at least i mostly eat well again and dont feel like death.

hope you feel better soon

Thanks for the reassurance. I have been feeling guilty but whenever I try to eat fruit I nearly gag, it even happens with strawberries which used to be my favourite!

I do want to know the genders please! I was fine in my last pregnancy, no sickness or anything - was a boy!

the first one where eating junk was the only thing that staved off sickness was a girl and the one where I could not face putting anything into my mouth was a boy :D

With my DD I really struggled to eat much in the first trimester. I completely went off healthy foods like salad, and some evenings all I could manage was a bowl of chips. It got a lot better as the pregnancy progressed though. DD is now a very healthy and happy two year old, doesn't seem to have affected her in the slightest!

So, don't worry, just eat what you can.

I found it hard to stomach food much at all in both my pregnancies. There was a very small range of stuff that I could get down, and the only way that I could eat vegetables was to stir-fry them and then drown them in terriaki sauce, so that my salt-cravings overcame my distaste. And I am vegetarian!

My nausea didn't really go until the third trimester, and I was very "conservative" in my eating habits even then. It was ages after I gave birth that I found myself thinking "Eggs? Oh yes, I do actually like eggs, don't I? Maybe I should have some for lunch". It was really strange to eat normally again.

The good news is that I've had two very healthy children that have shown no ill effects from my morning sickness or aversions. Even my friends who have had HE and been hospitalised due to dehydration have had healthy normal-weight children, it's astonishing how well the body can make a small person on what looks like very little. :)

Cat - I know exactly how you feel. I was super super healthy before my pregnancy and had actually managed to lose over three stone - I was in no way skinny, but I'm quite tall and made it to 10.7st, which was slim for me. Whilst I was eating healthily I knew I wasn't eating anywhere need enough in terms of daily calories. Since becoming pregnant I have been eating chocolate and sweets non stop... I'm eating lots of fruit too, but the surge in extra calories and unhealthy eating is making me really worried about baby and in only 9 weeks I've already put on 9lbs! Am so worried that I'll end up having an unhealthy baby and I'll be a fat mummy!

Thanks, interesting to hear othrs have experienced similar.
MrsTittlemouse - that is very interesting about the study. The body is amazing, isn't it? Those poor women though.
It's not just that I'm worried about the baby not getting enough nutrients, but more that it is getting too much salt/trans fats/nasties from my bad diet! As I said I'm not eating enough of it to pile on the weight, but definitely too much in proportion to other things.

All ate for my first trimester was chip butty's!! And im a super healthy make all mmy own food mum!! Don't panic, baby is getting everything it needs off you at the moment! It switches over to the placenta at about 12 - 14 weeks which hopefully by then you'll start to feel better!! I was so sick for the first 20 weeks of my pregnancy suffering from hypremesis that I lost 1 1/2 stone, I was only 9 1/2 stone to begin with! I'm now 31 weeks and have just reached my original pre birth weight! Baby is thriving and I'm measuring just over the 50th centile! Really, don't worry!! You'll soon go off the crap!
