Pregnancy

Should I fight cravings or give in to them?

I'm 20 weeks pregnant with DC2. When I was pregnant with DS I just went with my cravings for a certain type of sweet. I could eat 2 or 3 packets a day, obviously I balanced this with eating healthy foods for the rest of the time.

My midwife this time has said that the quantity of sugar I consumed may have contributed to DS having a birthweight of nearly 10 and a half pounds. I can now feel the same craving creeping back, and I'm not sure what to do. Is there any truth in sugar causing high birthweight? I don't relish the thought of giving birth to an 11lb baby, but if it's just an old wives tale I don't want to deny myself unnecessarily. Maybe if I try and stick to half a pack per day? Hmm

I'm not overweight, I'm underweight in fact with a pre-pregnancy BMI of 17. My own birthweight was 9lb 10oz so possibly genetic? I'm booked in for a glucose tolerance test in a couple of months - presumably I was flagged up for this because of DS's birthweight.

Do I go cold turkey and avoid the sweets altogether, have them but limit the amount, or just ignore the midwife and stuff my face?

I just posted something similar! We'll see what people say but lets hope we're ok to eat sweet things :o)

Yes I just saw your thread and laughed!! Snap! Grin

I have a chocolate muffin every morning for breakfast - I figure it is balanced by the two pieces of fruit and the custard that I have with it!!

Lol!

When I have something 'bad' (chocolate, icecream etc), even if I'm not hungry I'll then have some fruit to balance it out. I'm sure there's some logic in there somewhere!!

Hmmmmmm - I would be inclined to eat them in moderate amounts - what kind of sweets are they? I've been craving fizzy type sweets and fruity chewy type sweets too - sometimes they really help with nausea too. Maybe just have one when you're really desperate...It might be too hard to deny yourself completely.

It's something fizzy - I'll probably out myself if I say exactly what as everybody in RL knows me for it and takes the piss!

I've got an industrial sized pack of the things in the kitchen - very tempted to go and tuck in now!!
