Vaginal Staph Infection

I'm 24 weeks, and a vaginal swab has just come back saying that I have a vaginal staph infection. I've been on antibiotics for 4 days now but am feeling grim - every time I pee it stings and I feel generally run down and ill. I've lost my appetite and am feeling nauseous again.

Has anyone else had this? The doctors didn't seem too worried about it but Dr Google seems to think it's quite a serious infection and I am terrified it will harm my baby sad

Don't worry. I also had the same thing. I took the course of antibiotics during pregnancy and when I went into labour they gave me antibiotics so that I would not pass it on to the baby. I would not worry about it, but do take the anitbiotics when you go into labour that way it will not harm your baby. And stop reading up on internet!

Thanks Samoa smile

Oh Samoa, did you have Staph Aureus or Strep B? I'd heard that Strep B is the one they treat during labour.

pink are your symptoms like thrush? i have has what i thought was thrush for weeks with no change or sign of clearing up in weeks and 24 weeks tomorrow. the dr took a swab about 6 weeks ago would that of tested for that staph infection or is it a seperate one? i also fell extreamly run down and have no appitite!

Hey Valiant - yep a lot like thrush, it doesn't itch but I've got a constant burning sensation, especially when I pee. I'd been having some quite watery, milky coloured discharge (sorry, TMI) but not all the time, and the midwife suggested I went in for a swab which picked it up - I would have thought your swab would have picked it up too if you've got it. I am a bit angry though because the surgery took a few weeks to call me and I think it's given the infection a chance to take hold. I would definitely give them a call just to check that the fact they've not called you definitely means you're all clear.

PinkFondantFancy , so sorry, feel like such an idiot! Yes I had strep. I think I need to get my eyes tested! I hope that you are ok.

grin samoa no worries! I'd never heard of Staph before and lots of people have heard of Strep so it's completely understandable that that's how you read it!!

valiant any news? DH and I haven't had sex since the BFP because I just wasn't in the mood until recently and now my sex drive has finally started to make an appearance, my lady bits feel like they are being dunked in acid so sex is definitely off the menu for a bit sad

Valiant1 Tue 07-Jun-11 20:09:06

hi pinkster!! I had this just after MC last year... i think from memory it is bacterial linked but the abs should clear it up.... I also got really spotty and flushed cheeks with it which were a symptom. I wouldnt worry too much about it, you have picked it up and treated it thats the main thing... i am really conscious of these things though

Question do you have baths? I was told that bubblebath can help aggravate these things.... and not to use it. Dont know if that will help smile)

Also... i think the strep and staph are linked somehow, I got rid of the staph and ended up with strep A (not b). I was told the abs caused it. Strep A is the one that can cause premmie labour not the problems in birth so it had to be again treated.. keep your eyes peeled once your abs course has finished.

xx

Hey nix! I never have bubblebaths, think I've got a ridiculously sensitive fanjo because anything like that buuuuurns! blush. Antibiotic course finishes today and I feel no different so back to the drs for me..... Fingers crossed they can get it sorted! Thanks for heads up about strep A, will definitely keep an eye on things. xx
