Why do people think it is fine to comment on what you are eating?

I am starting to get really annoyed (at work mainly), about people commenting on my food...

today it was about the thickness of my cheese in my cheese sandwich... the slices where not the thinnest one but come on it was no more than 4mm...

then I get comment whenever I eat chocolate (which I tend to have daily but in small amount.

I know this is not the healthiest food ever but I do also eat fruits (pear, apple and raspberries as well as green beans with my dinner), only eat plain cornflakes with milk in the morning and fish or meat in the evening.

It does feel as if they are spying on my food intake...

Am I the only one getting annoyed on the comments?

Ignore! Some people are so obsessed with their own diet they can't help trying to spoil someone else's simple enjoyment of food. Eat, be happy, slice it 10mm thick if you like.

Damn it... now I want a cheese toastie!

Really though - don't worry about it! I've eaten whatever the hell I like, and sods to the people who look at me funny because of it. I've craved orange juice constantly, and someone had a go at me because I'm giving the baby too much Vit C. Tit. Also, apparantly been eating too much bread. Because of course, two slices of toast in the morning, and then a sandwich for lunch is "too much". I think people just like to make their opinions known when it comes to pregnant women, and I wish people would sod off lol!

oh fgs, like eating a cheese sandwich is going to make your child come out refusing to eat anything but cheese or something?? is it from people who dont even have kids?

Report
babloogirl · 06/06/2011 19:03

Nope they all do have kids but they had them some time ago...

and today one of my friends did bring me back some M&M's from a trip...and I had to have them didn't I Grin

I think I will just ignore their comments but it is just getting annoying that someone can make you feel guilty of what you eat...

...these are probably the same kind of people who think it's ok to comment freely on your size/green complexion/what you are wearing....morons basically. I have resorted to commenting back on their food etc and reminding them they have no excuse fatso!!! And being pregnant, it's the only time u can get away with that!!

If u are not as forward as me...ha ha...i gave up being polite....Give it a bit of"sorry I didn't realise I was being monitored" or thanks fir that useless price of info.

I've had that, I was eating a packet of crisps the other day and someone came over just to ask if this was what eating for two meant! She also commented today on a plain meringue I was eating to which I replied it was 40 calories. Oh, and she calls me fatty. And that's just one person never mind the others! They just don't think do they?! Sorry, rant over. I agree you're colleagues need to keep quiet, I mean eating cheese is hardly a scandal!!

I know it is hardly a scandal...especially when you are french!!!!(Sacre bleu!!!)

I know I may be eating too many sweets (but I love my skittles...so it can be up to 5 small packs in a week) but I can't help it!!!

I think I will use "sorry I didn't realise I was being monitored...I shall send you an email of my daily food intake later on in the day".

The worst thing is at first I was suffering badly from morning sickness and the only thing I could keep down was rice cakes (lost over a stone in the 1st 3 months) and at that time I was already getting comments...but this time it was that this wasn't enough food...I think when pregnant you can never get it right, can you?

I was at a big family meal last week (DH's family, not mine). Asked for seconds of pud...cue MIL screeching 'YOU'RE NOT EATING FOR TWO YOU KNOW'.

Was only because I couldn't have any cheese anyway - MIL knew in advance of meal i am pg so feck knows why she decided to exclusively get blue and soft cheese. Maybe it was so she could bellow 'You cant' have ANY of this can you? AHAHAHAHAHA'.

Seriously, never had so many thought murders about one person in an hour Angry

Gee some people are rude!

I would not dare pass judgement on anothers choices like that. It seems all manners and awareness of what is appropriate (and not) go out the window when it comes to a pregnant woman...

It reminds me of when I worked many many moons ago in a call centre. My colleagues were nice but if I'm honest, I didn't have much in common with them. Their lunch time topics of conversation were hair styles, holidays and what was in sandwiches. One day I brought in sushi. They all stopped eating and stared at my lunch, baffled. I had to explain what it was and they all thought I was a weirdo then, lol!

Your colleagues are being rude but then I think it's born out of ignorance really. I would just tell them that your diet is fine, thanks for the concern, and can we talk about something other than my lunch from now on please!

Tis annoying for you tho. My DH was being 'food police' in 1st trimester but then I was only wanting boiled sweets, smoothies and fruit at the time.

I got told off (quite sweetly) for eating a pack of salt free boots shapers maple flavour popcorn ( I recommend BTW) a week ago. I pointed out, equally sweetly, that they were salt free and considering the amount of food I was vomiting up every day, some popcorn was better than nothing!!!

I would suggest graphic descriptions of morning sickness if anyone mentions food to you, will eventually stop the conversations. A bit Pavlov's dog, but me thinks it'll work!!

Rootatoot..your story reminds me of when I started working in my current office 11 years ago. One of the managers was eating sushi one day and when she left the staff room, a conversation started up about "how up herself, she was. Thinking she's special eating sushi". Sorry for the off topic. Made me chuckle!!

Didn't you know that as soon as you are procreating, the world owns your body and has a say in what goes in it?? Grin
Next they will start patting your belly and making comments about the baby being made of cheese and chocolate.....

I love sushi too Rootatoot. As I was new to office, I thought crikey I'd better not be getting ideas above my station and bringing in something like couscous!!!

When l was preg with DD we ordered food at the local pub. The chef came out to check the order because he knew it was for us and informed me that as l was pregnant neither med steak (hubbys order) or scampi (mine) was suitable for a preg lady and would l like something else. Bless him l know he was only being kind (he was sure fish was off limits to preg ladies) but l did tell him politely where to stick it.

"oh fgs, like eating a cheese sandwich is going to make your child come out refusing to eat anything but cheese or something??"

This comment by Firawla has just made me laugh out loud, because during my pregnancy I didn't think my constant preference for cheese was actually a craving, more just the more convenient snack option at the time (eg 5am and I had woken up hungry, hmm cheese or chocolate biscuit?... cheese every time as not as bad for your teeth at that hour). However my DD, now 17 months old, would practically live on cheese if I let her! Smile

No but seriously OP, your work colleagues have no right to go commenting on your diet, it's none of their business. I mean, commenting on the thickness of cheese, WTF?!
