But midwife didn't mention anything? I'm guessing this means they found glucose in my urine sampe ... but why didn't they mention anything? Isn't this a sign of Gestational Diabetes?

Am 36+ weeks (was bang on 36 weeks when urine sample taken). Ideas anyone? What does it mean if I do have GD? Feel v guilty as have been pigging out on cake and biscuits of late...

Is it the first time you've had glucose in the urine? It can be a normal pregnancy thing- I've had it a few times. They did a blood test and my blood sugar levels were ok so they just put it down to my kidneys working overtime. If you only get 1 glucose reading here or there they probably won't follow up on it. 2 or 3+ and they'll do a blood test. If blood test shows a high reading, they'll do a glucose tolerance test to determine if you have gestational diabetes. At least, this is how it works in my nhs trust....

Thanks BSally - yes first time I've had anything other than 'NAD' in the notes. I am at higher risk of GD as my BMI is just under 35 and have put 'too much' weight on this pregnancy... but your post is reassuring.

I had that at 28 weeks. The grumpy cow of a midwife ignored it, even though the student midwife pointed it out to her.

They then forgot to do my GTT...

Then at 34 weeks was found to have GD.

If I was you I would keep to a low GI diet, then your sugars should always be fine anyway.

And do ask about it next time you see her, would be my advice. I didn't, it was my first baby and I was just clueless..won't be such an easy compliant patient next time!!

If you had eaten or drank something sugary before you did your urine sample that can mean there is glucose present in it. A one off reading with glucose in it isn't usually a cause for concern though, especially if you/baby are measuring normally.

I do have GD, but have never once had even trace glucose in my urine, and they test it weekly, same applies to my friend with GD.

I've had this on and off through my pregnancy (from 29w), midwife wasn't going to do another GTT test (had routine one at 28w which was fine) until it had been high for a 3rd time, but I think that I did get more regular MW checks because of it. I was eating quite a lot of sugar. And it did go in the weeks I have been more careful (and also in the weeks where I made sure I had no pudding the night before and no juice or even raisons on cereal that morning!). Had it last week again (38w) and they didn't express any concern, this week it was 'NAD' again.

I wouldn't worry if I was you, presumably you have more regular midwife checks now anyway, just be careful what you eat as you are obviously more sensitive to sugars at the moment.

Thanks all - had another appt today and got NAD, so that's good. They said that they only get concerned if it happens three or more times... and given I can't seem to get another midwife appt until I'm 40 weeks that would seem unlikely!
