Pregnant and breastfeeding - how much folic acid?

Does anyone know if the 400ug is enough when pregnant and breastfeeding?

I'm taking the Pregnacare supplements, but wondering if I should be topping up with a folic acid only tablet?

Forgot to ask when I saw the doctor a week ago, and not seeing my gynaecologist for another two weeks. (Though I know they are a bit 'meh' on Pregnacare anyway!)

Has anyone been advised on this already?

You really only need to take folic acid in the first 3 months. Folic acid is taken to help avoid spinal cord defects such as spina bifida and the spinal cord is developed in the baby's first 3 months.

400 ug should be fine unless you are high risk, then 500 ug should be taken.

I BF throughout my pregnancy with DD2 and just took normal pregnancy vitamins. Are you eating OK as well? I wouldn't worry too much, you should be getting plenty from the pregnacare unless your MW has said you are high risk.

There's a pregnant and BF support thread here if you haven't already seen it.

Thank you both smile

I'll check out the thread EauRouge!
