Pregnancy

A complete nightmare!

morrison1976 · 27/04/2011 20:46

This is me and my wifes first baby, and to be honest, it has been a complete nightmare for my wife. My wife is currently 20 weeks pregnant. For the first 15 weeks, she felt sick all the time, day and night, then about 4 weeks ago, she started to get pains in both hands and feet.

At first, her feet were worse, and she could only walk for 10 mins before her feet became so painful. Sometimes she will just sit there and her feet would start aching and sometimes this would last all day and night. At the time, my wifes hands would only hurt when she moved them, but the last two weeks, her hands have been so bad, even when she does not move them. She can't sleep at night because of the pain and the pain is there 24/7.

We went to our midwife and she said its most prob fluid, and she booked us to see a Physiotherapist. We went to see the physiotherapist and She asked loads of questions about the symptoms and check her hands and feet. She said it was worrying that my wifes feet and hands were really hot, and the fact that she couldn't straighten her hands or make a fist. She said my wife might have severe carpal tunnel syndrone, and said its quite rare for a woman who is only 18 weeks gone to have these symptons.

We told her that our doctor was going to make an appiontment to see rheumatologist. She went to check to see if they got my wifes information, and it turns out that our doctor did not even bother to tell them!!! So the woman said she will sort it out. She gave us some splinters for the hands but they did not work. She said that when we go home, i should get a bowl of hot water, and a bowl of cold water, and my wife should dip her hands in the cold for a while, and then the hot. We done this, and the symptoms did go for about 30 mins, but then they just come back stronger

we went to the hospital. We saw a doctor and she seemed to think that it was carpal tunnel syndrome. She took us to the anti natal department in the hospital. Another doctor came along and done some simple tests with my wifes hands and said he did not think it was carpal tunnel. He told her that she will have to stay there overnight and take a blood test. Also, he said he would get the Orthopedist doctor to check her out.

That night after i left, she was really bad. They gave her some sort of drink and she fell asleep for an hour, but woke up again in pain. In the end, they gave her an injection of Morphine that knocked her out all night.

The next day five Orthopedist doctors came over and done some simple tests. He said he did not believe it was carpal tunnel syndrome. The blood tests came back and they were fine, with no sign of arthritis. He said it was a complete mystery. He said he would get the Rheumatologist to come and see her.

He came and done some tests. He said he believed it was Rheumatoid Arthritis and they would need to do another blood test.

She was in so much pain they injected her with some sort of steroid and gave her 30mg codeine.

They said it will take a few days for the steroid to start working, so she should take the codeine, two every six hours. We have an appointment to see the Rheumatologist on the 5th may.

To be honest, the 15mg codeine did not work, and the 30mg is not working too and the steroid did not work either

I was very skeptical about the steroid because everything they have given my wife has not worked (apart from the morphine) but she can't take that everyday.

My wife was bad again, so i took her up the hospital. The midwife there said there is nothing they can do about it, and we really should not be in the marternity ward because its not pregnancy related, which is a load of rubbish. Anyways, another doctor came and could see she was in alot of pain, so he said she should stay the night.

She was in alot of pain that night and they gave her the drink again and the morphine, but they did not work as well as the first time she took them and the pain was there all night.

In the morning, a doctor came to see us and she said the blood tests came back fine, and she believed that the problem was fluid in the hands and sensitive nerves. She said there is not much they can do, and she will have to wait to see the Rheumatologist. Also, one of the drugs the midwife gave my wife was IBprofen. I asked if it was safe, and she said it was , but not after 24 weeks. Anyways, after two days of taking it, the doctor said we should not be taking it and stopped it straight away.

The sad thing about this, is they don't even know 100% what is causing this. I have had to stop work because my wife can't do anthing with her hands. She can't eat, wash, brush her teeth etc. She cries everyday because of the pain, and night time is the worst time. She said she has never felt pain like this before.

What i do to ease the pain in wrap a frozen bottle in a thin towel and she holds it at night so it numbs the hand and she can sleep. It the day time she has her hands in a bowl of cold water. But as soon at she takes her hands aways, they get so hot and the pain comes back again.

I rang the Rheumatologist today and managed to get an earlier appointment. We need to see him tomorrow, the same day we have our 20 week scan.

I am so stressed over this, and what makes it worse is, i have not come across one woman who went through, or is going through the same thing as my wife.

My wife is in a really bad way, and she is worried that there is nothing they can do about it, but she says she can't take the pain much longer. She said the pain feels like the time she trapped her finger in the car door, but this time its all over her hands and wrist 24/7. Also her hands are so hot and she has a burning pain feeling too. When i use the frozen bottle, the heat of her hands melts the ice quite quickly, thats how bad it is.

I hope we can get some answers tomorrow because there is only so much my wife can take. Im hoping someone here has gone through the same thing.

I can't give you any advice I'm afraid, but I didn't want your post to go unanswered. I'm sorry you and your wife are going through this & I hope the docs get to the bottom of it & get it treated ASAP.

Thanks for the reply. The thing is, i have not come across one person who has had, or is having the same symptoms. I am worried sick that all the stress and pain my wife is feeling will effect the baby. I sit there while she is in agony and i just feel helpless. If the Rheumatologist turns around and says there is nothing we can do, then God knows what will happen because the pain is just too much for my wife.

That does sound like a complete nightmare Morrison. Your poor wife! It must be so tough for you too, having to watch her suffer like this. I have never come across these symptoms before, so I can't comment on them, but it is worth remembering that in pregnancy things come and go. Hopefully this will pass like the morning sickness. In the meantime I hope you get some answers about what is causing this and what can be done to treat it.

Wow, I don't know what to say or have any advice but perhaps it isn't pregnancy related and is just really bad timing. Hope you get some answers and your wife some relief from the pain.

Raynaud's? Fibromyalgia?
I am not a doctor but I would like to reassure you that, although it is horrible and distressing for you and your wife, the pain alone will not damage the baby.
It could be pregnancy-related. I have Raynaud's and fibromyalgia and they were much worse during my first pregnancy but symptoms decreased rapidly as soon as my DS was born.
I really hope you get a diagnosis tomorrow, whatever the diagnosis may be, so you can find some effective pain relief for your wife. Best wishes to you both.

The thing is, she had no signs at all with these conditions before she was pregnant. They came on when she was about 15 weeks, and thats why i thought it was pregnancy related. I have a feeling she has something bad. She is asleep at the moment . She can sleep when she holds a frozen bottle of water because it numbs the pain.

I am not going to tell her about this as it might be too much for her, but i will mention it to the doctor tomorrow. Please God, i hope its noyhing bad like that!

Poor DW, just be careful with the frozen bottle - she doesn't need freezer burn or frostbite to add to problem.

Hope she gets relief soon

hi, i'm currently 20 weeks pregnant but have had rhuematoid arthritis for 4 years. The pain you describe sounds similar to the pain i had whilst in a flare up of my symptoms. I currently take a medicine called sulphasalzine which is safe during pregnancy. I have at the beginning taken the steroid prednisolene which got my symptoms under control and is also safe in pregnancy. I hope you get answers soon, i have heard of rhuematoid arthritis being triggered by pregnancy and it can also go into remission he you already have it.

so so sorry to read your post. It sounds horrific
(i always understood that ibuprofen is fine during 2nd trimester only and nurofen advertise that it can be used safely during 2nd trimester)

Have you tried any alternative therapys?
How about accupuncture (which is safe during pregnancy and helps lots of people with lots odf conditions)

I am 20 weeks and had severe sickness (HG) and it helped me a bit. Worth a try i guess, although it may take a few sessions to have any effect

I couldn't sleep last night. I was praying that she did not have this disease called erythromelalgia. That would be just too much for her. Im sick of going up the hospital, only for them to say there is nothing they can do, then sending her home again. She needs to stay there until they find out whats goin on!

Because we have the 20 week scan today, and then we see the specialist, my wife is not using the frozen bottle, and she is in agony. I just don't know what to do. I have not told her about the disease erythromelalgia. I think that would be too much for her, and i don't want to worry her just in case i am wrong.

Your poor wife - I really hope the doctors manage to get to the bottom of whatever is causing her pain.

Everyone is different, but I suffered from carpal tunnel during my third pregnancy and the pain was certainly not as horrendous as your wife's appears to be.

I just had to bath her. She is basically at the point where i have to wash her, feed her, brush her teeth etc Its really getting her down because she is the type of person who is always busy, and now she can't do anything and the pain is constant.

If there is nothing they can do, then she def will not last until september, as its getting worse. We might have to think about a termination, which would break mine and my wifes heart. I just don't know what to do. Im so scared this is a disease that is going to stay with her, and is not pregnancy related at all and just a coincidence that it started while she was pregnant.

Also, the fact that i have not come across a single person who had, or is having the same symptoms is very worrying.

I do not have any experience in this, but wish you all the luck in the world. Like Poppy says, you sound like a really great husband, and I hope you get a clear diagnosis finally. Please let us know how it went.
Yoshimi's explanation also sounds plausable.

I'm so sorry for your poor wife. My sis in law was told she had carpel tunnel during her pregnancy (nephew now 18 mnths old). It turned out that it was ME, which was a long drawn out diagnoses, through process of elimination of everything else. She is not as bad as your wife in terms of the pain, but from what I know of her ME, it does seem that some conditions are triggered by pregnancy.

I wish you all the best for her scan today, & hope that you can find some answers soon. Just be persistent (which sounds like you are) until you get a proper diagnoses.

I had carpal tunnel syndrome during my first pregnancy, in the third trimester, so later than your DW.

The pain was awful, and worst at night. I became very familiar with the BBC World service's 4am broadcasts.

I was unable to lift my arm enough to brush my hair, or do up my own bra strap, or carry a cup of tea.

I hope in a way that this what your DW has, because the good news is that it disappeared literally on delivery, and didn't recur in my two subsequent pregnancies.

Good luck with your scan.
