Low platelets anyone?

Hi all,

I'm 18+4 and have just been referred to a consultant for low platelets. They aren't too low at the moment (and to be honest, i've always had low platelets...). 10 week reading was 114 and 16 week reading was 126.

having googled, I've obviously found all the horror stories about needing infusions before labour, not being able to have an epidural / ventouse / forceps, having to have general anaesthetic for an EMCS, risk of blood loss....etc!

Just wondered how concerned I should be at this point (not that there's any point in worrying anyway) Did any of you start with a count in the 110's / 120's and drop dramatically during later pregnancy? I just want to get some idea of various scenarios (especially if there were no complications and everything went smoothly!)

And yes, I know my count isn't particularly low and there will be ladies on here who went down to the 20's and 30's level and will think "what are you worried about!" but I can't help my concern!

Thanks Smile

I had them in my last pregnancy (no trouble in this one).

they kind of sorted themselves out.

I also took care to eat an extra nutritious diet - lots and lots of iron.

It may have been coincidence but it did seem to improve my levels.

I can't really help as I'm in a similar situation to you annie but giving this a bump and hopefully someone else will be along soon.

I'm further along than you, 29 weeks, 2nd baby and my platelets have gone down to 133 which isn't terribly concerning and I haven't been referred to a consultant but I've got to be retested in a few weeks.

Would be interested to hear something other than the 'horror stories' on google.

I have a friend who has low platelets anyway (I couldn't tell you what), and so she was kept an eye on during her pregnancy by a consultant. Her labour was absolutely fine, but she did feel completely wiped out afterwards.

She realises now that she should have been more forceful about getting them to check her blood after giving birth - she assumed they would see about the low platelets on her notes and would do a blood test, but they only did when she was due to be sent home the next day and she said 'err shouldn't you check my platelets first?'. They were very very low at that point but it was still ok for her to go home, she just had to stay in bed for a few days and absolutely not bang her head or anything!
