Breech baby at 36 weeks

Just had a scan today which shows the baby is breech. I've been told it probably won't turn and i'll need an ECV.

Just wondered if anyone has had any experience of one and what the outcome was.

Thanks

Is it your first baby? A lot more likely to turn if it's not your first pregnancy. You can opt for an ECV - you don't have to have one. I had one at 39wks with DC1 and unsurprisingly it didn't work, and was v painful - but I was still glad that I gave it a go before I went for a c section. It's important to know the success rate of the person doing the ECV- ask the hospital. You can do things to influence the baby turning yourself - www.spinningbabies.com/. I had moxibustion too (some ridiculous chinese therapy) which totally didn't work and was a waste of £40. In the end, a csection is what a lot of people end up with anyway, so an elective really isn't that bad. I would add that I went into labour naturally a few hours after the failed ECV so be ready for the birth and have a fully packed hospital bag in the car when you go to have your ECV.

Sorry don't have any tips but just found out mine is breech today (34 weeks) - have been told I'll be offered an ECV if still breech at 36 weeks but not really sure how that works - please let me know what happens with you - hope all goes well

Dd2 turned breech between my 39+4 and 41 week appointments - naughty little madam. Told that my homebirth was off the cards. Sent to a Consultant at Shrewsbury Hospital that day who performed an ECV and turned her in less than a minute. The Consultant couldn't even believe how easy it was. She just seemed to be completely free in there. The Consultant said that she wished she had videotaped it, as it was textbook. She didn't turn back and was born at 42+2 cephalic. Didn't hurt at all. hope that helps you. Dd2 was my third child - currently nearly 39 weeks pregnant with dd3 (dc4)and still nervous it could happen again.

The ECV didn't hurt at all - the birth did.

Both my first and this one (my third) turned around 36 weeks, my second was breech at a scan at 38 weeks and didn't turn back so had a cs. I know of babies that have turned as late as 39 weeks so there is still time. Either way don't stress about it, the important thing is that the baby is born healthy.

I had an ECV, and Moxibustion, neither worked, even though the Midwife doing the Moxibustion said it was 100% percent for her so far! Also tried handstands in the swimming pool, the torch up the fanjo, frozen peas on top, cleaning floors...nothing worked. But I think she had been breech forever, we only found out at 37 weeks, had ECV at 38 - very late really. She was wedged up right into my ribs, not a hope really.
Had an elec c sect, although it was brought forward because of high BP. The ECV was uncomfortable, mostly the friction and pressure was painful but it didn't last - I used the breathing techniques I was learning for my home water birth!
As far as I remember, they inject you with something to loosen the muscles, then turn by basically pushing and manipulating round. The baby is monitored before and after, as are you. the Injection can make you feel a bit strange, but its not unpleasant - make your heart race I think, can't really remember. The I had to stay in for a bit, relaxing in a private room, on delivery suite, just in case you go into labour, as someone above said. They tried twice with me, and booked us in for another a few days later (although annoyingly, changed their minds about that when we had been there for 2 hours). We kept a labour bag with us just in case. I think I could take some paracetamol or something after for the soreness, but it only really lasted during the procedure.

The C section was ok, we were told a couple of days before that I did have a choice of really pushing (hehe) for a natural birth if I wanted to, but I just didn't feel that the consultant was behind it, felt I would have ended up with a emergency c sect, which I didn't want.

I do think our baby was very stubborn though! She still is now...and we named her Maggie, as she 'wasn't for turning' Grin

HTH - I think the thing is, it's different for everyone. In the end I just couldn't stand all the what ifs - if the baby turns then this, if she doesn't then this...I just agreed to C section and then could just prepare for having a baby rather than worrying about how she was going to arrive. hen I spent three days relaxing in our heated birthing pool!

Really hope it works out for you, hope my waffling helped a bit!

Sorry for the awful typing. When your baby arrives and they are about 11 months old, don't let them squash food into your laptop keyboard, is my other useful advice.....

I had a successful ECV in august last year, see this thread here

Total success. My son was born by normal delivery a month later.

I would absolutely do it again.

My baby was still breech at 36 weeks...I would gently try and encourage her to turn myself and I wonder if my - ahem - efforts caused me to go into labour at 36 weeks. Who knows? Anyway, I had her by EmCS and actually, it was all fine - we both recovered quickly, I was out of bed and sitting in a chair by the next day and it all went smoothly.
So if you do end up having a C section, it's really not the end of the world.

Good luck Smile
