no citrus drinks in labour?

At my antenatal class yesterday the teacher handed out a list of recommended things to pack in a labour bag. The list included 'fruit juice (not citrus)'. What's wrong with citrus juice? We asked the teacher but she didn't know!

I took bottles of frozen orange Lucozade Sport to the hospital and had to sign a disclaimer before I was allowed to drink it.

The midwife didn't want me to have anything other than water, but I don't understand why! The Lucozade Sport was fantastic, as it was a hot summer night and I sweated buckets.

(BTW, I recommend freezing your labour drinks, whether they be water or whatever, as the hospital rooms can be very hot, but you need to remind your OH to get them out of the freezer before you leave the house - put it on a checklist!)

I think it's so that you can have an anaesthetic more easily if you need an EMCS. Anyone?

It's possibly the acidity. But perhaps just an arbitrary thing - if she couldn't tell you why I'd probably ask your midwife if they have any such policy. I took lucozade sport as it's a sports/rehydration kind of drink, no problems with that. Also had water with a few drops of rescue remedy in, which I sipped rather than gulping.

You shouldn't drink lucozade energy (the fizzy one) as it won't rehydrate you adequately, I think similar for things like coke.

I think anything with caffeine is probably a no-no, unless anyone knows better?

That said, was told to take energy tablets. I hate the things so didn't bother, but DH found them useful.

I always assumed it was the acidity. Purely from the point of view that labour makes me hurl. Hurling orange juice hurts Grin

I drank an entire 4 pack of lucozade sport while giving birth to Dd in the birthing pool and no one said a word! I was more reliant on that than the gas and air tbh!

I think caffeine makes you spike and then crash though. I did have a cup of tea so it can't be that bad!

Energy tablets are more a slow release.

I think buttonmoon has it with "Hurling orange juice hurts" Grin
