Hello all,

DH and I are trying to keep our wonderful news under warps for the time being.

But I am somewhat of a gym bunny and am not sure when I ought to tell my gym/yoga instructors that I am expecting.

When did you tell?
xx

Yoga teacher I told as soon as I knew but asked her to keep it to herself. She has been good at making me slow down/remember that I am pregnant!

I told my gym teachers (I do Bodypump and Pilates), and they've been good about giving me alternative exercises and looking out for me.

However, my Pilates teacher has a very loud voice, and when she was coming round before the class to ask how everyone was and check for injuries, she asked me 'How's the baby doing?!' in a way that everyone heard... But I should have probably said right away that I wanted to keep it quiet when I told her, which I didn't.
Plus, I don't know anyone in my gym, so it didn't really matter...

Definitely tell them now. I didn't ask mine to keep it quiet but it didn't really matter as I didn't know anyone else, except for my mum, but she knew already.

They will want to tell you how to modify things during the class but TBH most people will probably take no notice.

When I was about 5 months pg (and rather large), my pilates instructor said something about being careful as you'll be off balance when you're pg, and people started looking around to see who was pg. This was despite it pretty much being the same people each week and I'd been modifying things since I was 8 weeks.

You'll probably start feeling a bit tired and sick soon and not feel like gymming as much anyway.
I'm a complete gym bunny, but didn't really do much between 6 and 12 weeks, in any of my pregnancies. I was fine doing my regular classes and gym sessions (no stomach stuff obviously) til about 28 weeks, then just did pregnancy classes/yoga, swimming and a bit of cross trainer til 40 weeks.
Its really important you tell your yoga teacher, its very easy to over stretch and do damage.

How many weeks pregnant are you?

If you are a 'gym bunny' and used to regular exercise I cannot see a problem - our aerobics instructor only gave up two weeks before she gave birth and she was leaping around much more than the rest of us Grin. I only found out I was eight weeks pregnant becuase my boobs were so uncomfortable that I assumed I needed a new sports bra Grin.

ragwort I didn't think anything much about my boobs being sore because my sister was having the same thing. It turned out we were both pg and due within 6 days of each other! Shock

Snusmumriken If you don't tell them yet, it is important that you don't do anything that stretches your belly, and don't lie on your front. And don't stand up too quickly if you start to feel a bit light headed. You can probably google it for more advice.

I told my Body Balance teacher ages ago that we were ttc, so not to ask questions if I suddenly stopped going to her classes!

I did, and she has been true to her word.

I'm hoping I can resume with modified exercises in the next couple of weeks (had 12-week scan today).

Pregnancy yoga/Pilates classes are also good for meeting other mums-to-be, I'd recommend them.

Forgot to say, first time around I told personal trainer straight away as we'd had IVF, which failed, and with IVF they had to stop training me in case of legal implications.

The IVF failed, but we conceived naturally the next month and I told my PT immediately.

I told them straight away. I had my pregnancy gym workout sorted out quite quickly. IIRC I did lots of dance classes in the first few weeks then stuck to mainly body balance / pilates until the end of both pregnancies, with some gym sessions for cardio.

My kickboxing teacher was a bit freaked out having me there with a little bump, even he just let me do what I felt comfortable with. I took it as an opportunity to avoid the push ups Grin. I carried on with it until 20 weeks.

I told my bodybalance instructor yesterday (am 6+5), and haven't told the bodypump instructors as they always change but got quite a good pamphlet about what you can and can't do in class. I also told my trainer right away which is good as she doesn't push me as hard now.

I have been told by all instructors that it's OK to do everything as before now, but when I start to show then you can't lie on your back etc

Dear all,

Thank you so much for all the responses and the great advice.Smile

This was my first post on mumsnet and I admit I was a little worried no one would respond!

I feel much more relaxed about heading to the gym and sharing my news. I guess I have a good reason not to hold the plank for a minute and a half now!

I am 5 weeks pregnant and am starting to feel very queasy! I will definitely cut down on some of my circuit classes for a while I think.

thanks again,
