Hi,
I did 2 home pregnancy tests last week which both came up as positive, but have just had one done at the hospital, and its coming up as negative, what's going on?! I was so excited noow not sure what to think. Am just waiting for blood test results. Lx

Which tests did you use? Some hospital tests will only show at 50mcg (or whatever the measurement is in), but some home tests only show at 10mcg. Did the positives at home appear within the 10 minutes and have a coloured line?

It could be a evap?
If the line wasn't pink or came up after time it states on the pack it could give a false positive. Saying that i've had a couple of evaps that were pink & within the time limit.

It could also be a chemical pregnancy which is a very early loss.

It could be that your tests are most sensitive than the hospital ones.

Fingers crossed your hcg levels show something.

Hi!
Thanks for all your answers, HCG levels came back at 7.1, and the confirmed that I AM pregnant, but they want to scan me tomorrow morning, to make sure everything is ok. Fingers crossed for me!

Congratulations.

I've not heard of hcg levels being given as 7.1.... do you mean 71?

If your levels are 71 it's highly unlikely you'll see anything in the womb as its far too early for that. So don't get worried if nothing shows up on a scan.

Good luck :)

Are you in the US pinkdaisy? As serendipity says, it's unlikely you'll see anything at the scan tomorrow, good luck!

No am in UK! Oh goodness, am clearly not readying it right! The HCG is 710, do you think anything will show up on the scan?

pinkdaisy, I just assumed you must be US because it's unusual in the UK to be offered blood tests and such an early scan. Have you been having fertility treatment? TBH I think it's very unlikely that the scan will pick up anything, it is possible they might see a very early yolk sac. But don't be surprised or disappointed if not. Let us know how you get on!

Jazz, you need a blood test to see the HcG level and they're not usually offered as standard in the UK. You could try one of the Clearblue conception tests if you don't know how many weeks you are?

They did a blood test at the hospital which is how they see the HCG levels.
Am now unsure of how much I will see in a scan tomorrow!

A friend had a scan at five weeks and they saw the yolk sac. It sounds like you're more like 4 weeks though?

I got two from Morrisons that gave a false positive, and so did my friend.

I reported them to trading standards

Thanks so much for all your advice! Will go tomorrow as they have suggested, but will not expect to see anything! This way, I won't be disappointed and anything that does appear is a bonus!

I think they normally expect to see something on a scan when your hcg levels are over a certain amount.
Don't take my word on it but it might be something like 1000 - 2000.

710 is great but it may be a little early to see something, if they don't see anything they'll probably ask you to come back in a few days or a weeks time for another scan.

Good luck x

Congratulations!

They might take follow up bloods tomorrow as they will be unlikely to see anything on a scan. Two blood tests at least 2 days apart give a good indication if all is well with the pregnancy.

Good luck!

False +ve tests are possible, but are extremely rare. See here for a scarily detailed discussion!

pinkdaisy - according to this table, a level of 710 is well within the (incredibly wide) "normal" range for a pregnancy of about 5 weeks from LMP (making a guess here, based on when you said you were testing at home). Did they take more bloods a couple of days after the first set? My understanding was that because the expected range for HcG in early pregnancy is so wide a much better indicator of the health of the pregnancy was to see the HcG level approximately double in about 48 hours. Even if they see something at the scanthe baby may well not be developed enough to be able to tell whether the pregnancy will continue - I know at my local EPU they try to get women to wait until 7 or 8 weeks as, with the best will in the world, they're extremely unlikely to pick up a heart beat before that point (and even then its not guaranteed that there will be a visible heart beat on a healthy pregnancy).

Whatever happens, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you :)
