Anyone planning a babymoon?

Afternoon all,
I booked 12 days off work over Easter before I found out I was pg and now not sure what to do with it - I'll be in my 2nd trimester so hopefully not as tired as I feel now and I like the idea of a final holiday before the baby comes along but don't know what kind of trip will be appropriate (will I feel too sick on a boat?, is a long flight a bad idea? Should I make sure I'm not going somewhere too hot / too cold?)

Just thought I'd see what anyone else has planned!

I went on a babymoon to Turkey in summer, it was lush. I was 5m pregnant, when it got too hot in the mid afternoon I went upstairs and read a book and had a nap. I read 6 books that holiday, slept alot, went out for some lovely meals. Me and DH had a really lovely time. Go for it!

I would aviod a longhaul as I would have gotten uncomfortable on the flight. The short haul was nothing though. My MW told me to take my Green Notes with me, drink bottled water and eat well/safely.

I'm planning on going away when I'm around 22 weeks pregnant, and was wondering the same thing! I think we're planning on doing a few different european locations by train, and then flying back home. I definitely didn't want anything long haul, nor anywhere too hot! My main difficultly has been that neither of us like 'beach' holidays, we both get really bored just sitting around, so I figure a few locations, with relaxing scenic train journeys in between, might be a good compromise between an active holiday, and what my pregnant body will actually cope with!

I'm really looking forward to it though - getting away for the last time in a long while with just me and my OH will be fab!

I went to Australia at 20 weeks and it was brilliant - just the break I needed at the point where I was beginning to feel so much better. I have very good friends out there, so DH stayed at home which meant I could afford to upgrade to business class, which obviously made the flight a lot more comfortable.

Did me the world of good and I was soooo looking forward to coming home as well by the end of it.

Hmm very tempted. I have enough airmiles to be able to fly business class so perhaps I can go a bit further-I might struggle to find sunshine in April if I stay local! I'll be 22 weeks by then. Australia would be too far for me (I couldn't handle the jet lag to west US before I was pg!). Will I be big at 22 weeks? Not sure if I'm keen on being on a beach when I look like a whale! Also don't want to go anywhere I'm likely to get tourist-related-bugs!

Why don't you try the Canaries? If you book flights and accommodation seperately, you can find some lovely boutique style luxury retreats. You don't want to go anywhere that's too far from home or has poor hygiene standards (Egypt/Turkey etc..). I am 23+5 weeks at the moment and have a very large, heavy bump. You might be lucky and not show too much by then..Who knows? Just make sure you have adequate travel insurance cover and enjoy!! Smile

We are planning a trip to the West Coast of Scotland and possibly Isle of Skye for a week and a bit before going over to the East to visit family and friends who won't have been able to get involved in the pregnancy and want to. Looking at doing it around the end of March and I will be about thirty weeks or so. Looking forward to a last quiet break before life changes hugely forever! :o

Do something you wont be able to do with a baby. I went and lay on a beach and didn't move for one whole week (much to DH's frustration) but it was another 11 years before I had the opportunity again to lie on a warm beach uninterrupted.

Gosh, yes, agree you should go somewhere and do something that you won't be able to do with a baby or small child. I went to Greece when 12 weeks with my first. I'm not really a beach person but I still look back fondly on that week spent reading and dozing in the sun. A subsequent Greek holiday a couple of years later with toddler DS really was not the same.

I thought a babymoon is where you stay in bed for a couple of weeks with the baby, and snuggle up together as a family and don't let visitors in. Grin

Yep, hubby just booked our this morning. We're off to the Canary islands next week for 10 days. I'll be 25 weeks and I do have quite a big bump but I've going to buy a nice tankini tomorrow. We're looking forward to a nice relaxing 10 days of quality time before little one arrives x

InspectorGadget - yes, I think that is what's usually meant by a babymoon. I can recommend: didn't do it for DC1 (for some reason I wanted to feel and act as if nothing had changed) but did for DC2, and it was lovely (quite as nice in its own way as a pre-baby holiday Grin).

OP, sorry for hijack.

We had a baby moon before DD was born. It was in April a few years back and we went to Italy, around Lake Garda/Venice for just over a week.

It was lovely to have some "us time" before she arrived, and we spent many lazy meals (with the odd glass of wine) discussing baby names and so on.

However, the weather was very mixed. Some days were a total washout and others were glorious. Not really a beach lounged type of holiday, but we enjoyed it. Would definitely recommend the concept of a baby moon as we took DD on a long-haul flight aged 1 and it was very hard work! We've avoided flying since then.

I took a holiday to Thailand in April when I was expecting DS (20 wks)...was heaven!!! Over the sickness and not too tired, just lazed around on tropical beaches, lots of cheap pedicures and spicy food. Am pg again and we took DS with us when I was about 12 weeks, much harder work with a toddler and being as sick as a dog so I whole heartedly recommend the last 'fling' before its kid clubs and sausages and chips. I would just say research where you are going, drink lots water and flight socks for long haul (or bag an upgrade) and enjoy!!!!

I would love to do a long weekend somewhere like the Canary Islands or Italy in April or very early May - but have struggled to find somewhere small and boutiquey that does long weekends. I am sure there are loads and i am just being naff in my research. Can anyone recommend anywhere?

If you want boutiquey and are willing to pay, check out www.mrandmrssmith.com. Great boutique hotels all over the world. They've got a couplein Southern Spain that I thought looked good for spring which is when you want somewhere far enough south to have good weather.

I went to Dubai for a week in October when 6 mths pg with DC2 (my last holiday away) - 6 hour flight, fantastic warm weather and beach, great hotels and food - and we needed child-friendly as had 17-mth DS. They also have good medical facilities. Make sure you are covered for health insurance if you travel and also cancellation insurance in case you need to cancel for medical reasons. Cyprus is also nice and warm at that time of year if you want to go somewhere closer.

I went to Canary island when i was 26 weeks and the flight wasn't too long (4 hours) and the weather was good (it was late oct and was getting cold in UK already then). We initially wanted to go to egypt but was worried if there's any complication we are outside EU and the health care system may not be as good.

We ended up sleeping and baby watching in an all inclusive resort and read lots of baby books. :)

Ooh Cyprus and Dubai are both good ideas! Carribean also looks do-able especially somewhere like Bermuda which is only a 6-7 hour flight. I certainly feel like the while idea is worth persuing!!! Agree that Egypt or Morocco might not be good, not necessarily on hygiene grounds but I think there's a fair chance of picking up more bugs there than other places mentioned and that would be horrible!

If I won the lottery I'd go to the Maldives but as I don't even play the lottery I should probably forget that idea!

I went away on business to Tasmania in November when 28wks pregnant. I went business class to Melbourne which was very comfy, despite my growing bump, but then flew economy to Hobart - the longest hour ever! My advice would be to upgrade if you can so that you can arrive at your desination feeling fresh. Also take advantage of any showers at airports where you have connections.
