Pregnancy

Not been contacted about my scan

I may be worrying unnecessarily but it's my first time at all of this!

I'm just 9 weeks - and no one has contacted me about my first scan.

I saw my GP at the beginning of November to let her know I was pregnant and self referred myself to Kingston Hospital... but have heard nothing. I'm assuming the hospital is low staffed because of the snow as I cannot get through on the phone.

Can someone tell me when you were contacted?

Thank you :)

I'd call the GP and ask them. You usually get a booking scan with a MW before your scan. The GPs might have a MW affliated to them who you could ask when your booking appointment is likely to be.

Congratulations Xmas Smile

I'd keep calling them then. Most hospitals do the growth scan at 12 weeks and you usually have a booking scan before that. However, some hospitals offer a Nuchal scan too and I think that this can be done between 10 and 13 weeks.

When you have your booking scan they usually ask where you'd like to give birth so while you are on the phone it might be worth finding out if they offer homebirth, birth centre as well as the traditional labour wards.

Good luck, it must be very frustrating.

Check with your surgery.

My scan was booked by my midwife after my booking appointment. I had the booking appointment at It very much depends on the area but I'm a bit surprised that you are 9 weeks have been allowed to self refer for a scan and haven't got a midwife appointment (or at least you haven't mentioned it).

That said, you need to have your scan by around 13 weeks (think its 13+6) for nuchal translucency, if you're having that, so there's plenty of time yet.

I don't know about you but I have had no post in over 3 days due to the snow. It is possible you just haven't received the letter.

I must say though I didn't get my letter for my 12 week scan until I was 11 weeks. So you might be worrying for nothing. I assume you have booked your booking in appointment with your midwife already? I had mine arranged when I was 6 weeks pregnant for when I was 10 weeks - This was nice because it gave me something to look forward too. Not that it was even remotely exciting.

It was however informative, I found out what would be done and when. I was given my pregnancy notes which gave me a timetable of what to expect. I also found out what appointments I would have to book and what appointments would be booked for me. This is different for different areas, in my area we don't contact the hospital to arrange the scan the midwife refers me. We also see our midwife at our local GP surgery although she is only there 2 days a week (Tuesdays for booking appointments and Fridays for check-ups). I have heard that in some areas you have to contact the hospital to arrange your booking in appointment with the midwife and most of your care is in the hospital - I'm glad mine isn't like this since I resent paying for parking as it is, especially at a hospital.

Once you've had your growth scan you can book your NCT antenatal course, if you are thinking of doing that. You can find out more here

If you sign up for NCT Stepping Stones it gives you some good info on what should happen when.

I had my DD at Kingston; it is very good but also quite over-subscribed. I would recommend you call the Maternity ward and check they've received your GPs referral letter (they hadn't received mine) and given that it fills up quickly I would do it right this second!!

Great news that they got your letter Scarlett. How short notice do they mean? Will you have to take your notes to work with you just in case?

Hi there i've been waiting ages for my midwife to get in touch as well. I finally got hold of the hospital and was told that I would get a letter when I'm 10 weeks. I don't mind that but it would have been easier if they had sent me out a letter telling me what to expect as this is my first and I have no idea how it all works!

Just a warning, I am due late May, and had a call from Kingston telling me they were fully booked. Luckily my GP had mucked up - I had already had my booking in at Chelsea and Westminster!

I'd chase it up. I didn't hear anything about my first booking in scan at another hospital. It turned out they'd sent all the paperwork to an address I'd lived at 10 years previously!
