Pregnancy

light brown spotting

I am 5+5 today. Had the lightest of brown tinge to my cm last night and this lunchtime. Occasional abdominal twinges that I think/hope are my IBS. GP sent me to hospital today, positive pregnany test was repeated, and I will be scanned in a few days. They were not too concerned and said this light brown spotting "can be normal".

Has anyone else experienced this? How did it turn out?

I am about 8 weeks and had a little pink cm a couple of days earlier this week. It's gone now and I still have pg symptoms so I'm not worried. Have had loads of abdominal twinges too over the past weeks, think this is perfectly normal - things are growing fast down there!

Everything I read said a little spotting is fine, and it can happen for lots of reasons.

Hello fallingandlaughing,
Thank you! I am in almost the exact situation. I had spotting (brown) on monday and some stronger then normal aches, went to docs and then hospital and am booked in for early scan tomorrow. Am 6+2 today. Am VERY nervous, this is first pregnancy, we were so excited but this has shaken us a bit and we're just waiting til tomorrow morning (scan is at 8am) when is yours? I'll let you know what happens.

Sorry to be thick but is 5+5 five weeks and five days or 5 months and 5 days?

If weeks has anyone mentioned it might be implantation bleeding? Very light brown smudges. I had it with my first pregnancy I didnt know I was pregnant and assumed it was my period coming on. Pregnancy was fine (DD now a strapping 4 year old).

Hi, i had it last week for 5 days and now its cleared up. i havnt done anything about it as hav an early scan anyway next week. Im 6+6 today so spotting at the same time. Inplantation bleeding happens about 11 days after conception and 1-2 days before your is due so its likely to just be movement and changes to your body causing a bit brown (old) blood to come away. in my 1st pregnancy i bled properly at week 7, 11 and 15 and my little boy is nearly 2 now.
Good luck with the scan xx

sorry that was meant to ay before your period is due for the implantation bleed.

good luck tomorrow Pippa. I will have my fingers crossed for you and your little one. It really knocks you when things aren't quite as straightforward as you hoped.

I am due an early scan on Wednesday morning with my consultants (I have diabetes and epilepsy). I was told today that I could get seen at the EPU on Monday but I am thinking of waiting. If nothing else happens I may wait til Wednesday.

Kerala, sorry that's 5 weeks, 5 days! I would also describe mine as smudges. No extra volume, just a change of colour. No-one has mentioned implantation, I thought it would be too late for that, but I am very glad and grateful to hear your experience. Great to hear your DD turned out just fine!

Morning ladies,
So I thought I'd update you with the outcome of my early scan this morning. It was FAB! I hardly slept last night thanks to my stupid busy brain so was fairly tense this morning, but I was first appt so no waiting. Doc explained what she was looking for- sack, yolk, heartbeat etc & also said she may not see all of it. Then she went v quiet, I couldn't see the screen so was trying to read my bf's face- no use! THEN she said she could see everything! She turned the screen round & I could instantly see teeny heart racing! She said it all looks good! It was brilliant! They say the brown can still be coming from
Implantation & aches from pregnancy settling in! Sorry to go on, am over emotional! I hope your scans are just as wonderful!

Brown spotting is really common in early pregnancy and often there's absolutely nothing to worry about, so stay positive. If you don't have any cramping or pink/red blood then it's very likely it's just some old blood or possible implantation bleeding. I had some brown spotting and even some heavier brown bleeding at about eight weeks and I am 20 weeks now and baby is kicking about it there. Lots of luck and hope it all goes well.

thanks for this thread. it has really reassured me as i have some dark brown spotting. just wondered how long it was normal to go on for though, as i have had it since 5 weeks and i am now 6 + 2. it's not all the time but it seems to be quite frequent on wiping (tmiBlush)

A couple of "real-life" people have told me they had it throughout pregnancy. Mine has stopped but I guess it depends on the cause. I have endometriosis so have been wondering if that might be to do with it.

nb I didn't mean to start 2 threads - they just appeared!

Hi again, Good luck to you guys on Wednesday, am sure you'll have just as lovely experience as we did. I also have endo and wondered whether the pains and brown (blurgh) was linked to that somehow? I actually forgot to ask the doctor about it on Friday, was too distracted by little heart.
Anyways, I think the thing is to not worry, it seems v common. Let me know how you get on! xx

fallingandlaughing · 27/11/2010 21:19

Oh that's interesting about the endo pippa

I'll try to remember to ask on Wednesday. Because I don't have much in the way of symptoms it is in some ways hard to believe we will see anything on Wednesday. But I did buy knitted bootees and a swaddling blanket at a Christmas fair today so I guess I am holding on to that optimism and you story has really helped.

Just wanted to update in case anyone is reading this with similar worries. I had my first scan today and everything is fine. Obstetrician said light brown spotting common at this stage due to implantation of the placenta.

I've been terrified all day after some pinkish brown spotting last night and reddish brown at 5am. Have had a little brownish spotting throughout the day. Can't get to EPU for a scan because of snow so am stuck waiting till the weather clears. Spotting has only been when I've wiped after going to the loo, nothing in knickers (and am obsessively checking every 30 mins). I think I'm 8+2 today. Had an early scan last Monday and saw heartbeat and measurements seemed spot on for 7 weeks. Just praying everything turns out okay and hating playing the waiting game.

Highheels,

obviously I am no expert, but from what I have picked up I would say try not to worry. I can't tell you the number of people I know who turned out to have had that while pregnant. The promising things are that it sounds light, and you haven't mentioned any strong cramping (mild pains/cramps also normal I think). Also you've had that positive scan. Fingers crossed for you that you are able to get to the epu for some reassuring news soon.
