old wives tale - fetal heartbeat and gender prediction

We don't know sex of our baby but I am still trying to guess. I read online that if heartbeat is lower than 140 it's a boy and if it's higher it's a girl. Guess what mine is - yep, bang on 140! That'll teach me... of well, is probably rubbish anyway (or is it - what do you think?)

Not sure TBH.
But I was watching Portland babies on Discovery H&H and one of the midwives said if the heartbeat sounds like a train it's a boy and if it sounds like a horse galloping it's a girl, not sure if can tell the difference though Grin

DS's was always bang on 140. This time round DC's (not sure of gender) is always 160. Have also had hyperemesis this time, didn't have this last time, and things have generally been very different. It will be interesting to see! From everything I've read the heartrate theory is meant to be rubbish, but this doesn't stop me guessing!

The fetal heartbeats in both my pregnancies were 120- 130...and they were both boys so it worked for me!

I did a quick survey of my friends 2nd time round and it worked for 3 out of 3 of them. (2 boys & 1 girl)

Can't wait to test it out this time around!

ah, but what should I read into 140 on the nose!

DDs heart rate was below 140 when monitoring at induction time (around 120-130). MW was convinced it was a boy. :)

It worked for all mine!! Smile

You will get a different reading every time you go so you will be able to see a pattern and then have a guess. I wouldn't buy any pink or blue clothes because of it though Grin

This babys was 140 spot on too, scan told us he's a boy for definate though. I suspected baby was a boy though (he's my 6th baby), with my 3 girls i'd just craved sweet things and doughnuts Blush but with this baby it was lemon juice (yuk), pickle (yuk) tomato soup and cheese just as with my boys before. I know there's nothing really in it but it's just how it's been for me Smile

My DD was bang on 140 everytime although all of my friends that had girls (six of them) all said they knew as they were over 140 only two got it wrong

My DTD's were around 160, and this one has had a high heartbeat, around 160 although mw refusing to tell me what it is now!! However, we suspect boy - wedding band says boy, chinese prediction says boy and baby has talipes in left foot, and boys twice as likely to have that. We shall see, baby due on 19th December!

The first was 'normal', second and third were fast and 4th was 'normal'.

Ist, 2nd and 3rd were boys, 4th was a girl.

My mum was a midwife early on in her career and she told me that they really did think they were on to something in the 1950s and so she and her colleagues decided to do a survey of actual births - the first 5 were spot on and then the next 15 did not follow the pattern. So they gave up.

I tried the chinese ring thing - worked for mine (all boys). But I guess it is too small a sample.

When I was in labour with DS2 the midwife checked his heartbeat and told me I was going to have a girl!

But I went in for monitoring the other day and in the 30 mins I was in there, the baby's heart rate ranged from 130 - 160 depending on whether it was monving around or not. What does this mean?!

BelieveInLife · 20/11/2010 10:43

Mine was 150-160 and throughout pg and was a boy.

DD's heartrate was always on the low side - so we bucked the trend. This LO's heart rate is below 140.....

Report
Miffster · 20/11/2010 10:57

Doesn't it depend on whether the baby is asleep or awake, how fast their heartrate is?

So you get different readings at different times...

thefurryone · 20/11/2010 14:33

Oh dear I thought it was the other way round and that 158 bpm meant I was having a boy!

Although having studied my symptoms and the all the old wives tales in some detail though I have to conclude that the only possible outcome is boy & girl twins Grin

Ours was 178 at 1st scan & has been higher than 140 all along...and it's a boy. So I guess it's not foolproof...

DD's heartrate was v low during my loooong labour and five different midwives coming on and off shift throughout were adamant I was having a boy til she arrived (but then I have a low heartrate too)
