Pregnancy

Single Artery Cord

I've just had my 20 week scan and have been told that I have a single artery cord... and its got me really worried!

Everything was absolutely fine with the baby, she said the heart looked perfect and both kidneys were there but I'm still worrying.

I've been booked in for a growth scan at 33 weeks and have spoken to my midwife who has booked me in for an extra appointment.

Just wondered if anyone had been in a similar situation - I've read online that chances are everything will be fine if no other abnormalities are detected but still worrying me.

Thanks

I have my 20 week scan tomorrow so I'll find out if I'm in the same boat as you then.

Try not to worry - it's not going to change anything anyway. The scan said the baby is fine so that's a lot to be grateful for.

The extra appointments sound sensible, I guess if the baby is small for dates at 33 weeks they'll look at treatment options then. There's absolutely nothing you can do about it anyway except, I guess, make sure you take your vitamins and keep your nutrition levels up so baby gets as much goodness as it can.

Hopefully someone will be along shortly who actually knows what they're talking about (rather than me, who has always been of the "if you can change it, do so, if you can't, worrying won't help" school of thought).

Anyway, good luck,

Please, please don't worry (and don't google!!!) Where I work we don't even report them anymore so, ladies will have them and be blissfully unaware until babe arrives! Please, forget it, enjoy your pregnancy and rather see it as a positive- you get to have a sneaky extra scan!! Xx

My ds2 had this but it was never picked up in a scan so we had no clue til he was born. He had a kidney scan at 6 week old and that came back fine. There was one thing wrong with him that we think was down to the single artery cord though, he was born with only 3 fingers and thumb on his left hand (pic on profile). This also wasn't picked up on a scan. I really wouldn't worry as they know about it and have already checked everything and you are getting an extra scan. Try (easier said than done) to relax and enjoy your pregnancy :)

I had this with DS1 and worried myself sick for no reason. He was/is absolutely fine in every way :) enjoy the extra scans!

My sil had this, or at least was told she did but then it turned out (i am pretty certain when baby was born but possibly at the growth scan) that she didn't.

I'm not sure if that is common or rare but thought i'd post it so you knew its possible

Thank you all for your kind words - you've definitely made me feel a bit better, although the tears have started again!! :)

I'm trying to focus on the positive that baby seemed fine in the scan and it was a very thorough check. Looking forward to the extra scan!!

Thank you all again.
