How does undiagnosed maternal GD manifest itself in the baby?

Long story short - it was discovered via a scan one day prior to my due date that my baby was 98th centile.

I was booked in for an induction for this reason, and one of the concerns was that I may have had undiagnosed GD. I was never offered a GTT during my pregnancy, even though I'm 36. For what it's worth, I did have the test with DC1 and it came back clear.

Anyway, I had DC2 - she weighed 9lb 4oz, so was definitely big, but I didn't hear any more re the GD. Can I assume I didn't have GD, or could it possibly be that I did but was just lucky that DC2 wasn't affected in any way?

As an aside, DH and I are both tall and well built (though not fat/overweight), so a big baby wasn't altogether unexpected. DC1 was 6lb 13oz, which was much more surprising.

I think the way it affects them is large birth weight and then trouble with their blood sugar levels when born and soon after.

It's quite likely that your baby scored a high agpar, feed well etc so they weren't worried?

My 2nd was large and I'm tiny (all dh's fault) and they were so panicky after she was born, taking heel prick for tests etc etc clearly I didn't have GD she was just large as I kept telling them! Everytime I mentioned how huge I was they kept tell me that I measured small for dates.....she was 10lb6oz and her height was way off the centiles......

Was your baby still skinny? Newborn are not very meaty IYSWIM. I had heavy babies 9lb + but long, heavy boned, and skinny (at birth), Have been tested for GD with both, negative both times.
GD often create very fat/plump newborns more like a 6 months old babie's proportions?
If the release note from the hospital doesn't mention anything about it I would think your are in the clear. Ask your consultant or MW if you are worried.

CArgirl is right GD babies can have problem regulating their blood sugar straight after birth.

As mamaloco says my baby was very long but slim and still had no thighs or bum for weeks and weeks so although she was huge and needed 0-3 months for the length she wasn't "chunky"

I've had three babies and had GD each time.Your routine blood and urine tests must have been fine or you would have been offered a GTT. You might possibly have become slightly glucose intolerant right at the end - it is not uncommon and the baby packs on weight in the last couple of weeks - but your baby is not that big and is obviously healthy so don't worry. If their breathing and blood sugar is all right after birth and they feed well there is no extra treatment, even for babies of known GD mothers. Congratulations on having a lovely baby.

Thanks so much for the feedback everyone. My routine blood and urine tests were all fine although I've heard that your urine can show no traces of glucose and you can still have GD.

The AGPAR test was fine, she fed well immediately and there were no other concerns. She is definitely tall, and came out with a decent but not unreasonable level of padding.

I have mÅ· 6 week check next week so am planning to ask about it then.

Thanks again. :)
