Nursery furniture

Hi everyone,

I am looking at nursery furniture and wondering if anyone has any recommendations on where to buy? I won't need a wardrobe as the nursery has a built in wardrobe, so I am looking for a cot and changing table/chest of drawers that can be used as a changing table.
All the sets I can find are with a cotbed rather than a cot. Mostly they have a wardrobe aswell or with 7 pieces (eg toybox, shelf, chair, footstool etc!!)

Anyone got any ideas?

mothercare have some nice ranges and you can buy just the bits you want

John Lewis for me.... the drawers unit had a removable changing unit on the top. This was 2 years ago, but I'm sure their ranges are always good.

I have looked at both Mothercare and John Lewis and although there things look good the ones I like do not come with matching things - so you end up with mix-matched furniture!
Maybe thats just me......?

We've gone for a Cosatto set, they seem pretty well made and I'd say reasonably priced! Kiddisave etc. stock them.

I got all mine on EBay and bought a new mattress from Mothercare. Picked the bits I wanted and then searched for them nearby on EBay. My cot was from Mothercare originally and I hadn't seen the changing unit before but just happened to find it. Got few bits for storage from Ikea and they deliver now too.

I bought mine from mamas and papas... I did get wardrobe / toy box etc but could just have bought cot and drawers with changing unit..

Ikea. Got most of mine there years ago. Is good quality and affordable.

Just buy normal drawers, you pay a premium for something called a changing table even though it is basically the same, maybe with a lip around the back.

Here's the furniture they do some 3 piece sets and most of the bits as separate items too. Is there a particular style you're looking for by the way?

Although I would gently comment that your child isn't going to notice if they match or not.... and if you follow the recommendations they're going to be in your room for 6 months anyway....

I got mine from Babies R Us.

I fond most of the nursery furniture to be a right rip off to be honest.

Second recommendation for Ikea. I actually got a cot bed etc from Mamas and Papas but wish I'd spent the money on something else and got a basic cot from Ikea. Plus I never used the changing table - easier to do it on the floor.

Also, remember it's not too urgent - they'll probably be in your bedroom for a good few months before moving into the nursery.

Thanks for all the advice, have looked again on the mothercare website and their items look good, will try and convince my husband to take a trip to Ikea.....

This absolutely isn't urgent at all, especially as like you all say the baby will be in our room for a while. I'm 28 weeks and getting carried away I guess. However, it would be nice to get the nursery ready for new baby as we still need somewhere to store clothes etc so may aswell get the cot too!

I got most of my furniture from ikea in fact all of it from there.

Kiddicare.com have some nice things too, but I love a trip to ikea and my meatball meal treat.

More ebay here. The cot and changing table are part of the Anna John Lewis range but I got the cot for £30 (then got a new mattress) and changing table for £35 - both from ebay. We've just moved DD1 into an Anna junior bed - also found via ebay (again with a new mattress) in preparation for DD2's arrival. I'd give ebay a go and save your money for other bits and pieces.

We got all our stuff from Ikea, Ebay and gumtree. We have come in way under budget leaving me with pennies for essentials like pedicures and a nice dinner or two out before Dd arrives in September!!

NoTea - I got all my stuff early too, but looking back it was silly and I wish I'd waited until I was ready to make a rational decision, rather than just wanting everything in M&P!!

I like the mismatched look personally. I am keeping an eye on ebay for old wooden chest of drawers and beside tables that I can upcycle (I do love a bit of crafty DIY me!)

I'm planning on sanding and repainting in eco paints and then changing the handles for ceramic/glass or other fancy type ones. The baby will eventually share with DD so the room needs to be baby friendly, but 6 year old friendly at the same time.

As for the cot, that I will get from Babies R us - I'm probably going to get the Versailles cotbed in white as it will go well with the modern but vintagey look that I'm after. I'm not in any realy hurry though as baby will sleep with us for first 6 months or so anyway.

Would reccomend quality and well made cot from M&P and then chest of drawers that are made of solid wood, something that you will happily have in your bedroom in couple of year's time. In my experience by the time they are 2, you will hang more clothes than put stuff in drawers. You will soon need something more funky to put toys away etc etc. So get something that you will like to keep. And something that perhaps already goes with furniture in your bedroom or other rooms? And forget the changing table. In the middle of the night, when it is dark and you are half asleep, floor is the way to do it. Relax and have fun shoppingt

Mamas and Papas stuff can be lovely, but they also do some overpriced s**t!!

I'm definitely going for a changing table as I have a bad back and dodgy joints, so changing on the floor all the time or lifting a cot-top one up isn't an option. But I'm thinking of getting a decent chest of drawers and just using that - I might get my Dad to make a fiddle-rail or I might just use non-slip stuff under a changing mat.

We're just going for white furniture so that it doesn't have to exactly the same range to match.

I love the look of M&P stuff but its waaaay to pricey for the quality. Ditto John Lewis. You could go for boori if youve got lots of money or stokke have a lovely (pricey) cot but I think their wardrobe is a bit of a joke (very narrow), not an issue for you. I looked round for ages and fell in love with cosatto for build quality and look, but I have a traditional house. Got the Hogarth Roomset in cream but DH is yet to decorate baby's room so its parked flatpack in there- am dying to see what its like when I finally get it set up!! Ikea is great quality for low price - they also have a cool (nursing) chair I am coveting but worry that lack of arms may make it hard to feed baby in.

I have a dodgey back and used to put dds on our double bed to change them, on a changing pad with a towel on top.
If I were you I would just buy a lovely big chest of drawers to keep clothes in which you can stick a big free-standing mirror on later and use as a dressing table. I bought a second hand rocker. A big tall bookcase, fixed to the wall for safety, is also useful. You can fit it with pretty baskets to stash toiletries, folded muslins etc and use it to display soft toys etc. Then when dc is older stack it with stories and games. Think long term and save your money for books and experiences!

I would also echo the voices saying go for normal furniture! Try and think ahead if you can.....

First time around we bought a Mamas & Papas Cotbed and accessories, but when I changed DS bed at 5, I didn't want cream furniture - so got rid of most of it (wouldn't fit in any other baby's room) just kept the cotbed.

If I had bought oak/ type units in the first place, I could have matched them in with a "junior" room far more easily.
