Potty training

Toilet training regression?

Hello, I have began to toilet train my almost 2.5 year old girl. She's managed very well and had got to the stage of me not needing to remind her at all, she would consistently come to me every 1.5/2 hours and ask. She did that for almost 10 days.

However, the last 3/4 days she has gone back to having wee accidents up to 5/6 times a day, like when we first started. She's showing no interest in asking for the toilet. I'm baffled.
If we ask her if she needs, she says no, and then 5 minutes later there's a wet patch. It's almost like us asking her has reminded her and then she realised she actually does need, but rather than ask (which she would previously have done) she just wets.

If we try to just take her anyway. She kicks and screams and goes rigid and we can't get her to sit on the toilet. Might be worth mentioning it's been very warm the last few days so she might have been having more to drink? She's usually ok with asking to go for poops.

I have just been cleaning her up, matter of
fact, and asking her that she must tell me if she needs, she says "ok Mummy" and then wets again next time.
Any advice?

Thank you

Should add I've emailed the health visitor and mentioned about maybe a UTI, but she seems fine in herself and no discomfort when I've seen her peeing.

Give her a break from it then try again in a few weeks.

Hi we have a 2 1/2 year old boy and it's the exact same scenario s you've mentioned above, although we are still @ the initial stages of potty training. He would keep on having accidents for the first 8 days, we would rush him to the bathroom each time he wet his pants.

On Day 9&10, he went without a single incident, we used timed interval to catch his pees after liquids. He can poo in the potty chair and would even tell us, but peeing, he wouldn't even sit on the potty chair, nonetheless go pee in it. He would scream quite loudly.

Just wondering what did you end up, did you manage to get her to go back to sitting on the potty?

Thanks!

Hi. Similar but longer situation here. My little one was 2yrs 3months when we started and she picked it up almost immediately- we even managed a weeks holiday with no accidents, she didn’t need reminding, would just take herself off to the potty THE DREAM! This lasted approx 2months even at nursery THEN she regressed, started having 5-6 accidents a day at home and at nursery. I hoped it would only last a week or so but 3 months later we’re getting nowhere. We are now having to remind her every hour to go and she kicks up a fuss about going on the potty, needs loads of persuasion to get on and loads of treats afterwards yet still has accidents if we dont remind her etc. I’m at a loss! Really don’t want to go back to nappies as feels like a huge step back but don’t know what else to do!
No signs of UTI, have talked to health visitor but feel like we have tried all their suggestions. HELP PLEASE!

Exactly the same story here. From day one we had 2 weeks of perfection, not a single accident. We couldn't believe it. And now out of the blue 2 weeks later she is having accident after accident 🤯

Give all of you a break. My dd didn't really crack it until she was about 4.
Competitive toilet training sucks almost as bad as competitive infant feeding.
My 13 year old now hogs the bathroom experimenting with make up. I genuinely never thought we'd crack it.

So I made a sticker chart for short intervals in the day, breakfast, play, snack, play, lunch, etc.
I tried hard to get her to either ask to go or I would take her in each of those 45min:1 hour intervals. If she was dry all day, she got a treat, which was she wanted to hold teddy ornaments from our display cabinet as she isn't normally allowed to touch them. Shes been looking in at them for days, begging to hold them, so I thought it was a good incentive. This worked like a charm, and after one accident the first day, the second day was back to no accidents and asking herself, no problem.

She was fine again for nearly 2 weeks, asking every time, no need to be prompted when suddenly a week ago, the same thing.

Forgetting to ask, almost doing it on purpose it seems, going blank when we ask why she didn't ask to go.

Sometimes she's watching something on a screen and she then wets, so we've said no screens until she starts to ask us again, every time.

This then prompted her to ask every 5 minutes in the hope of gaining her screen back. She's a very clever girl for 2.5 years to work out "if I ask to go to the toilet I'll get my screen" which makes it all the more maddening that she can't/won't ask every time to go, when a few days ago she was.

One thing we did think may have confused her is we have been going out for our daily walks in our local forest, and at times she's needed to go when out, and we've encouraged her to go on the grass. This then may have prompted her to go in our garden at home, but we explained she still needed to take off her pants etc.

At my wits end again.

Will try the sticker chart again and Taking at regular intervals and no screens until she regularly asks again.

Hopefully back to normal soon. Thanks for all your replies. Helpful to know I'm not alone in this!

Not sure what the deleted message was, sorry to have missed the comment.

Just thought I'd update, it turned out that she had an infection, so we have antibiotics and she's gone back to asking every time, what a relief!

Exactly the same here. So variable. She can sometimes just run over and use the potty without prompting and sometimes tell us she needs a wee and sometimes just have a big accident.
Part of me knows this is normal but 6 months down the line when initially she had it sussed straight away makes it so maddening!
I've got her a star jar thing off Etsy, which is helping at the minute alongside regular prompting but as with everything else, I'm fully expecting her to lose interest soon and we'll have to find something else to reward her with.
Hope you're having some success??

Regression to a previous time in ones life is common for children when they feel disturbed. You can either fight this, and loose the battle, or support this and put your child back into diapers, identify what caused the stress, wait the three days and restart the toilet training via How To Successfully Potty Train
