Potty training

Need some advice as things are not going well :(

We started potty training my son who is 2 and 4 months last Saturday. We are following the method in 'oh crap, potty training' during the first phase we really struggled to get him to sit on the potty, he would fight and kick when we tried to put him on as he started wee'ing.

This has carried on and he is now holding his wees for as long as he can and wetting himself when its too much. We can see he needs to go as he is dancing around the room and we try and sit him on the potty but even when we get him to sit (through bribery) he will not release the wee!

He has sat on the potty a few times with his clothes on so I don't think its fear of the potty. I wonder if he is too young and we should stop but he seems to have bladder control and know when he needs to wee.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I feel like its very very very slowly getting better but its very stressful for myself and my partner and we worry its stressful for him too :(

He’s not ready. They get it so quickly when they are. Dd was trained fully, no accidents in 3 days.

Give it a couple of months and try again. If he’s fighting the potty it will just make a bad association in his mind, and that’s not good for anyone.

Honestly? He’s not ready. Back to nappies and try again in a couple of months.

Yup. He's not ready. Leave the potty out, let him choose to sit on it if he wants but pause potty training.
My DD was over 3 highly resistant until she was ready and then cracked it in days.

@MustardScreams how old was your daughter when she trained and did you try before this an have to give up or was she successful first time?

As others have said, he's not ready. Ages vary, but my HV told me around 3 is probably average. My younger was just shy of his third birthday, my older just a few months older than three. Both fully potty trained within days. No drama. I find, assuming there are no additional needs, most families that wait have an easy time, and most families who start too young and persevere have a miserable time. Going to the loo should be a natural thing that doesn't involve lots of coaxing, rewards, etc.

We tried twice with DD but she wasn't ready. Tried again just before she turned 3 and only took 3 days.

Honestly leave it a bit and try again in a few months. My DS got it in a day, once he was ready! He was three and a bit.
