So I started trying my 2 1/2 year old ds on Saturday. Not too many accidents and certainly seems to be improving already and he asks to use the potty.... however this is every half an hour Hmm do I stick with it for a couple of weeks and see how he goes?? Would I be crazy to think he could be in pants at home and wear training pants out for a while?? Or should I just take him back to nappies ?? I can't even see how we could take my dd to preschool Confused any advice gladly taken

I remember taking dd to the loo three times during a 40 minute baby ballet class. To get there you had to walk across a gym floor with people working out and then she was wearing a leotard that had to be taken off. Not much ballet was done that lesson!

It did settle down pretty quick - by the following week we only went once!

His bladder control will get better. In the first week mine were not telling me but I was taking them every 30 mins, then 45 mins on day 3, 60 mins on day 5 and upto 60-90 mins on day 7. And then slowly over week 2 upto 2 hours. It is then that I started to let them tell me when they needed the toilet. Go to preschool. You might find he can hold. And go to the toilet once you are there and then come back and go again. You might be surprised.

That's normal, they learn to hold it a bit more over time. Remember they are learning a new skill they aren't going to perfect it straight away.

I tried to limit trips out for the first few weeks and used puppy training pads in car seats and lots of changes of clothes.

They are going to take much longer to get it if they only gave to wee in the potty at home.

Ahh thanks everyone, that's really encouraging. We've got no plans for the week so I'll definitely stick to it with him after hearing from you all. He seems to be doing so well I wouldn't want to make him go back to nappies Grin

Haha this post made me laugh, we had exactly the same thing with our DS.

I think part of it is the novelty, I remember thinking how on earth would we ever manage to go to Tesco let alone anywhere exciting!

She cracked it during a fortnight in January (when she was 2.5) and has been brilliant ever since!

I think once they get over the fact parents rush around once they say "need a wee" it all gets back to normal!

Good luck!

Thank you Smile that was my thought exactly as I going to have months of not really being able to leave the house until he is actually ready and can go longer in between Hmm there was a glimmer of hope yesterday afternoon he managed 2 hours between at one point, though this morning he's had 3 wees and only woke at half 7

He sounds like he is doing really well. (although I heard one of the things that shows a child is ready is that they can go without weeing for about an hour) so give him a big drink and hopefully a big wee will come and see if he can go around an hour without weeing it's a sign he is ready) I gave my child 'treat' drinks, just while training so apple juice on tap so he wee lots as I wanted to get it done quick and it was done rather quick. I didn't bother with pull ups just take a potty with me and fresh underpants and pants. If they ask to wee while out I find a fairly private corner or whatever and get them on the potty quick. I would always try them on the potty before leaving the house. After a week he could make it wait a bit (I still carry a potty in the car though)

Thank you Smile he managed a couple of gaps of over an hour yesterday and this morning after putting his nappy on just before he went to sleep it was completely dry!! So he can hold it Shock definitely no going back.

My DS is 2.7 and we are on day 2. He is weeing every 10 minutes though so if it doesn’t improve over the course of today I’m going to abandon and wait a few weeks.

Day 6 here now and he's usually managing at least an hour, dry nappy last night .... off out for the first time this week for a little park trip with one of my dds friends as she's on half term from preschool and we've done nothing for her

That’s reassuring to hear it has improved. DS is currently napping but has been weeing every 10 minutes all day long. If bare bottomed he makes it to the potty every time. If he has pants on he just wets them.

I’m fed up of being stuck in the house already so tempted to give in!

We tried about 5 weeks ago, it was a bit half hearted and in the space of an hour he wet 6 pairs of pants Confused I didn't stick at it as we were going away last week and I still had the preschool run, but Saturday I put him in pants first thing and he really tried to go on his potty every time we've had very few accidents, just 3 days of half hourly wees

We chose this week as it’s half term so he isn’t at the childminders. If he hasn’t cracked it over the weekend she will really struggle as she can’t change him every 15 minutes with other children as well.

Same here, if it didn't happen this week I'd would be trying again over the summer holidays, then he'd have less time to get used to it before starting preschool himself
