How can I get my DS to learn to wear pants?

My DS is almost 3. We have cracked peeing and pooing in the potty. He will happily take himself off and got to the potty and come out clapping and cheering... when he has no pants on.
I have tried everything and he just can’t get the hang of taking himself off to the potty when he is in pants. We are currently struggling that he can’t come and say to me ‘I need a wee.’ But if I ask him he can say yes or no. When asked he normally says no which then leads in wet pants or him crying whilst I get him to sit on the potty.
I have tried buy boxers instead of ‘y fronts’, I have tried leaving him in the pants for a minute before taking them off so he feels their wet, I have brought the pant liners and I have even tried keeping pull ups on him and getting him to go every 15 minutes with no luck. He will hold on and not got until he has his pants pulled up.
I am honestly open to any suggestions because I’m at a loss. Tia xx

Do you encourage him to pull his own pants on in the morning? If he practices doing it and you put him in trousers with loose elasticated waistbands he might start to feel comfortable undressing himself for the potty when he needs to go. Maybe he doesn't like the idea of having to pull his pants down, or it is too much effort? I'd concentrate on him getting himself undressed if he's not used to doing that - then the rest of the issues will just iron itself out xx

Have you tried easy to push down trousers but no pants? Not sure if your op means he only uses the potty when he's got no bottoms on at all or with bottoms but no pants?
