Potty training

Potty refusal!

Tried training DD last year, didn't work, we chucked it and are trying again now.

One of the issues we had last time around is that she sometimes just flatly refused to go on the potty, even when it had been ages since she'd last weed.

This time around, we decided to use chocolate buttons (don't judge, please!). It's all been going pretty well. Yesterday was a particularly great day, got all wees in the potty.

But today is a day of MASSIVE potty refusal. Says she doesn't want it, doesn't have a wee coming, picked up her potty and threw it across the room... Shock

This morning she called that she had a wee coming. I ran downstairs (I'd been on the loo myself, as it happens) and said, ok let's go on the potty.

She said, no, I don't want the potty, I don't have a wee coming.

I left the room and when I went back she'd done an absolutely massive wee on the sofa which had gone all the way through to the base (it's still drying 🙄).

She's 2.8 and is generally pretty strong willed.

Help?!

Are you still having bad refusal days OP? If it is an odd day here an there it could just be a bit of defiance/ regression but I guess if it's really regular then perhaps not quite ready? My DS is currently training and managed to crack wees in potty in a few days (poos is a refusal situation as for some reason he has anxiety about pooing in potty/toilet) however he often says "no" if I ask him if he needs a wee - even if it's clear he does. If I need to prompt him to use potty I find me simply saying "go use the potty" or "wees go in the potty" will be successful. He basically doesn't like me asking if he needs it!

Oh also .. some days DS will be far more receptive to using the big toilet rather than the potty. So if he's in a funk with potty training I've suggested going on the big toilet to mix things up - sometimes works!

Have you managed to get poos in the potty?

I had this and just had to wait and try again a couple of months later. Remind her of the bribe (chocolate buttons or whatever, no judging here!) and if that still doesn't work you can't force her to use the potty so just be patient. Unless she'd be happier on the toilet?

Thanks both! We actually turned a real corner yesterday. Had quite a bit of refusal in the morning, but happily went to the loo at dance class (I think cos it was interesting/unfamiliar), and then for the rest of the day ASKED FOR THE POTTY WHEN SHE NEEDED A WEE!

And then did a poo in the potty.

And throughout today, she asked for the potty when she needed a wee, no accidents.

I think when she began to 'get it', ie connect the feeling of needing to wee with going on the potty, she felt more in control.

I am beside myself with joy, as you can probably tell. Grin
