Won't wear pants!

So we're on day 4 of potty training ds 2.8. He's doing so well when he has a naked bottom, only 5 accidents over the 4 days, but as soon as I put a pair of pants or loose shorts on him he Pees!
How long should I be waiting before introducing underwear? He decided himself to take off the nappies and start using the potty so I believe he's definitely ready but I would like to leave the house and have him fully dry in the day before he goes back to nursery in a few weeks!

Is he bothered when he's wet? Honestly I'd let him wet them so he knows the feeling so he will learn not to do it anymore. Yes it's a pain but kind of necessary.
I know he has nursery in a few weeks but don't be disappointed if you don't crack it by then, you can't really impose a timetable on them to be dry by. My DS soiled pants for four months until we got it. It was tough.

It doesn't seem to bother him at all, before he started using the potty I didn't think he was anywhere close to ready as he would happily stay in a wet nappy.
I'll just keep going how we're going for now and accept the extra washing! Hopefully it will click soon.

I followed the Oh Crap book which recommends commando for the first 3-4 weeks (so loose bottoms, no underwear).

Apparently the tightness of underwear can feel like a nappy so you get far more accidents. You need to break the link hence waiting a few weeks for underwear.

Sorry, just realised you maybe meant any bottoms rather than underwear?

Yes I mean any bottoms! We've tried pants on their own and a pair of 'outside' loose shorts as well. Both were wet within minutes but he's able to stop get the bottoms off then run to the potty and finish there!

Maybe give it a few more days but if there's really no improvement I would just abandon the whole thing for now to be honest. I tried it at 2.11 and failed. Then at 3.1 we had much more success. Dry within a week or two from what I remember. Obviously we still had accidents and as I said poo took bloody ages but it was much easier second attempt.
