... we've been potty training for three hours and I want to jack it in already. DD is 2.11 and very smart. We've talked about potty training, she's been excited to wear knickers, knows what the potty is for etc, but in terms of being out of nappies it's been three hours and I've had enough. She has weed through every single pair of knickers she's had on. Not a single drop in the potty. She's happy to sit on the potty, happy to try but just wees in her knickers. I know I'm not supposed to get cross but I'm really, really fed up already. She's done about six or seven wees now so plenty of opportunity to have a go at the potty but each one she's proudly come and told me she's wet herself. Can someone give me a kick up the arse please and tell me to get a grip? Oh, and can someone also tell me she'll get it please?

Take the knickers off. Bare bum only fir the first few days. Knickers only when she’s reliably going on the potty.

Yup. You have to watch like a hawk first few days for her “signs”. Once you see a sign... grab her and put her on the potty so she makes an association. Even if she is still peeing!
I absolutely hates potty training, wanted to shoot my self the first few days. But it does come to them in time

Come on, you can't give up after 3 hours! I agree just have her go without knickers and wear a dress. Go out in the garden with a couple of potties and try and put her on it every 15 mins or so.
Alternatively stick her on a potty with the iPad and a drink. Eventually she will pee and you can make a massive fuss. That way she will start to recognise how it feels to wee on a potty - she's got to make links between her mind and peeing.
Hang on in there it's not the best stage of parenting!

My son had a wild first day or so when we took him out of nappies. He was like a tom cat marking his territory. He already had plenty of experience of the potty as he'd used it for poo since he started on solid food and I knew he could tell in plenty of time that he needed to go as he'd always got out of the paddling pool without prompting for a wee or poo, but he seemed to want to make the most of his new found freedom to carry out some kind of experiment about where he could put wees and poos and what my reaction would be. After about a day and a half, when he'd established that there really was no good place for a wee or poo other than the potty or toilet, he calmed down and we were much more successful.

Six or seven wees in three hours and none on the potty?! Honestly, you have to obsessively follow with the potty to begin with and get it under them even if they are half way through a wee. That’s also a huge number of wees in such a short space of time.

Just because she is smart doesn’t mean she is ready for potty training. Most people choose to either train themselves for catch wee in a potty with a younger child or else wait until they are older and they have it completely cracked within a couple of days.

It will happen, don't worry. I potty-trained first DC in the depths of winter. Took days to get anything anywhere near the target, then all of a sudden he just got it.

I second previous posters' suggestions. No pants, stay in the garden so no dramas if she wees on the grass (let's face it, the lawn needs all the help it can get in the dry weather) and cheer like she's made Olympic Gold first time she hits the target.

I would also give her a massive drink and then sit her on the potty with some toys until she gets one in there and bribe heavily with chocolate buttons, but then no one has ever nominated me for a parenting award, oddly enough. It's one method though!

You can definitely never deploy enough chocolate buttons during potty training.

I have also never been nominated for a parenting award...

I could have written this post last week. The first day, we got through 13 pairs of knickers! Awful, really felt like it was impossible. But, by the afternoon of the second day she was getting it, and now we are on day 10 and she’s completely dry at home (back at nursery yesterday and had one accident there). Agree with watching like a hawk and putting her on mid-wee, and rewarding anything in the potty. We stuck with knickers, but know most people recommend bare bums. Our main issue is that she doesn’t give much notice, and doesn’t like to go on demand, so if I sit her on the potty she will insist she doesn’t need to go, but then will leg it over, apparently desperate, two minutes later. Hoping that’ll resolve soon so we can leave the house again!

Don’t give up though! Maybe if she’s not getting it at all by day 5 or 6, but you have to give it a good, intense try. It truly is the worst part of parenting so far, I have to say.

Thank you everyone! Feeing much less of a shit parent already (ignoring the fact she's just necked a beaker is milk and is sat on the potty watching Hey Duggee on a loop). We're knickerless now, she really wanted them on earlier but seems happy enough to be bare bummed now so we're going with it.

She's ready surely- I know she's done a lot of wees (she did have juice earlier which she never normally has so that could be why) but she can take her own pants up and down, tells me when's she's weeing / pooing in her nappy etc- showing lots of signs. She's three next month! I won't give up (and won't open the gin before 5pm bedtime.

I think I may have thrown my toys out of the pram too soon- we were just having tea and she told me she needed a wee so we dashed to the potty and she did one, hoo bloody rah!

Reinforce with copious chocolate buttons! Ours are kept in a special jar, with the mantra 1 for a wee, 2 for a poo!

This is making me nostalgic for the hours I spent buying tiny knickers and pants for my DS's and DD. Buy triple what you think you'll need. And some plain ones. Some kids get upset if they wee on their character friend…
