Potty training

Withholding out the house

DS is 2.9 and has been toilet trained for a little over a month. He's excellent at home and nursery- will use the potty and the toilet for wees and poos and doesn't have accidents. At home we have a potty and a toilet seat attachment and whilst he prefers the potty he will use both. Ditto at nursery.

He really hates going in public toilets out the house and will withhold for hours until he is super uncomfortable and grouchy. If we're out all day he will eventually go if you hold him on but he really cries and gets upset.

Any ideas how to tackle this one or will it come with time? I don't remember DD being like this although she had less ability to hold it for so long. I don't really want to drag a potty around with me...

I am carrying a potty round with me! Figure it's a phase like everything else. Hope you find a solution.

Ha thanks bunloaf it's annoying because I feel like I don't need to carry a potty because he can hold till he reaches a toilet he doesn't need to go the second he feels the urge. But he hates public toilets!

My dd is exactly the same. I am hoping she just grows out of it. Soon!

My niece struggled with this too .. time was a healer and now shes quite the opposite and likes to try out every bloody toilet shes never been to before. My SIL and MIL made a deal out of always taking her with then when they used public loos instead of leaving her with someone else and nipping off.. she got more curious that everyone else sempt to go fine and started to give it a go herlself less cautiously.
