Potty training

Too early to try?

I realise I'm probably being ridiculous but just wanted to see if anyone else has any experience/advice on this...

My 18 month old did a wee on the potty this evening. She has been interested in the potty for a few weeks, loves sitting on it before bath and can say 'wee wee' and 'poo poo'. For the past few days I have taken her nappy off and let her sit on the potty, and she sits on it for a second or two, then gets up, sits down again and repeats a few times. If I say to her to do a poo poo, she tries to (I can hear/smell evidence of this - lovely!), and this evening when I said 'do a wee wee!', she did a small one in the potty.

Now I'm not sure whether I should grab this interest with both hands and see if she might be ready to try potty training, or to just ignore and stay with nappies? I have an older DD who potty trained at almost 2.5 yrs, so this feels very very early to even be considering it, but on the other hand I don't want to miss an opportunity.

Has anyone else experienced this, and if so how did you handle it? For what it's worth she does seem to know when she has done a wee or poo, as she tells me, but I don't think she knows when she is about to do one.

Thanks in advance!!

My son was toilet trained in the day by 16 months and in the night by 17 months. If you feel she is ready then try it. I think they need to be able to tell you when they need to go though, otherwise could be just coincidence

Sounds a good time to try. I did it slowly at that age with ds and he was day trained by age 2. I did use pull ups to lessen accidents and make it easier to pull up and down

I wouldn't bother. You'll just be making work for yourself (wiping, pulling clothes up and down, etc.) and increase the number of accidents and overall time taken. They can have fairly decent bladder control but mental development and things like dexterity for sorting out clothes and toilet paper still have a long way to go.

We left it until DD was nearly 3 (I did check with her that she wasn't desperate to get out of nappies before that) and she went from nappies to independently using the toilet within a week. Also only 1 accident and weirdly that was a few weeks after we'd done it.

Wow your very lucky seems like shes ready. If you have the time and your at home why not continue by getting her in pull ups instead of nappies and adding some more nappy free periods during the day.

My DD refused to wear nappies from 22 months so we had to train her then. This myth that it will take so much longer and be a lot more work is such a load of nonsense! Hmm However, you do have to be prepared to teach them rather than relying on them to train themselves.

I'd recommend reading Oh Crap which recommends training between 20 and 30 months and then see what you think.
