Advice needed please lady's. Started to potty train my daughter yesterday and it went so well was really pleased then today has been a nightmare. She has wet herself a.number of times and pooped twice in her pants. Now I'm wondering if I'm starting her and she isn't ready? Should I put her back in pull ups to avoid accidents and take her to the loo often or do I need to stick it out with pants? I'm aware it's only day 2 but it has left me a bit unsure on how to go forward. Any advise would be most welcome ☺️

Just wait until she's ready. My DD has just turned 3.5 and she's decided she's ready...she's been dry, day and night, for a week now.

Don't understand why people put so much pressure on themselves and the kids to potty train too early. I understand that nappies are a pain in the arse but so is washing endless loads of clothes cause the child isn't ready.

My advice would be stop for a short period and read the Oh Crap book as it will give you lots of advice and a structure to follow. The book suggests no underwear for the first couple of weeks because it can give kids the secure feeling of wearing a nappy and therefore lead to accidents.

The book is really easy to read, you only need to read the first few chapters to get going.

I’d keep going. There will be days when there are constant accidents. Consistency is the key.
Naked from waist down keep several potty’s around the house.
Both mine could only cope with pants after about a week bare bum.
I wouldn’t bother with pull ups at all. They’re just nappies and they’re confusing for the child.

I think all children are different, my little girl is 2 and dry day and night but she hated a wet nappy, she even gets up in the night for a wee on her potty or toilet and goes back to bed, her cousin is nearly a year older and is dry in the day but sodden at night. I’d wait until she tries to start herself, summer is a better time to start as pp said they can strip off from waist down xx

Personally after so many accidents I would go back to pull ups for a couple of weeks. Potty training is so much easier when they are ready and willing. Has she been showing signs of wanting to not wear nappies anymore?

I'm with work worries on this. Why make life difficult? My DD was 3.5 and just did it. Because she was ready

Did you think she was ready before potty training? If so I would see how she does today. If it was just you thought it was time then I would be inclined to put her back in nappies for a bit. My d's was 3 nearly 4 when he decided just after Christmas and that was it we have had a couple of times when we haven't been quick enough and a poorly tummy related accidents but he has been dry since.

I agree, don't get pull-ups. Also, if she has done it for a day she knows what she is doing and is choosing to wet her pants. She needs to want to do it in the potty! (Children really don't care about all the extra washing you have to do!)
What worked for us at this point was letting my son choose 2 little haribo sweets every time he did it on the potty. And the bribery worked amazingly well for us! But I think this was because he so rarely has sweets, it really was such a treat for him.

All this pressure about potty training is bollocks. Wait until they're ready. Why spend a week cleaning up pee and shit and bribing your kids to pee. Fuck that. Wait tin they're showing an interest and actually know when they're going to go, use pull ups if you want and it doesn't matter if they're 3 or even later

My 2.9 month old ds starts nursery in September and HAS to be in pants. He really isn't ready though

Keep going to avoid confusion. Two years None months is plenty old enough to be trained unless they have learning difficulties. You are going to have good days and bad days. Day two is often tough as the novelty has worn off - it takes more than two days.
I’d arrange to be at home as much as possible, put on potty hourly. Praise for going but not over the top, singing and dancing. The message is it’s normal. Rewards like the sweets are are good idea.
Sitting them on potty whilst you go works well.

We're on day 4 with a 2yr 7 month old and it's gone like this:

Day 1: 3 wees in leggings, one poo on floor
Day 2: all wees in potty bar one when she was eating. Poo was nearly on the floor but I swooped her up and caught it in the potty. Much praise given!
Day 3: all wees in potty bar one on the floor when playing. Poo in potty.
Day 4 (today): 730 wee during breakfast even though I put her on potty when she woke. She made up for it because at 8am she chose to go on the potty and did another big wee. Makes me think she held the last one in a bit (she cried after she wet herself).

I do feel a little progress is being made every day and I'm trying not to let the set backs put me off. It's too late at day 4 to back out any way!

Oh yes, I think that day one was a disaster because of the leggings. She's bare bummed now and it's helped a lot! I also sit her on puppy pads!

That sounds totally normal. It's not a sign she's not ready, just that she hasn't understood it yet! Expect the first week to be full of accidents. It's normal.

The only time I'd say to stop is if you find yourself and the child in tears and battling around it. The stress for both would not be worth it. But a few accidents in the early days is par for the course.

Personally I’d say persevere. Day 2 was always worse than day 1 in my experience as the novelty has worn off! She’ll get the hang of it in a few days.

I think i would give it more than two days but if she carries on having accidents then back to nappies/pull ups

As a pp said all dc are so different in when they are ready

My dc1&2 were both over 3 before day dry, they also started school using pull ups at bedtime and until age 7 even though took away pull ups they would have a couple of night accidents a month. Sometimes both on the same night which was much fun.

Dc3 was dry day and night just after 2nd birthday since then shes had 3 night accidents (now nearly 5) all when poorly

I actually had a dry 2 year old and 6/7 year olds having night accidents at the same time

I'd definitely keep going. All this 'leave them in nappies till 4' what about the environment? I had one that was easy and another who couldn't care less and had accidents till she started school. I don't think it was really a reason to keep her in nappies for an additional 2 years. It sounds like she's doing fine tbh, they don't all wake up one day 'ready' if I'd done that work dd2 she'd have started school in nappies.

Namechange16 · 18/02/2018 08:30

Unless there were learning difficulties I'd never have my 4 year old in nappies. I'm reluctant for a 3 year old tbh. My dd is currently learning how to go to the potty. She's not having accidents because she's not ready I feel.

My first dd trained hat 2.3. I trained her early because dd2 was coming. This time I feel my dd is ready.

I agree with the people who say keep going. I’ve just toilet trained my 2.7 year old. She had some days where she was brilliant and other days not, depending on her mood! But after a week she was brilliant. I did get some stickers and we did a little reward book.... I found at first she was excited to use the potty and toilet but the novelty soon wore off and she just wanted to carry on playing. The stickers helped give her some excitement to go. We’ve even mastered poo’s on the toilet now. I also think it’s best to start naked from the waist down for as much as you can when you’re at home.
