Potty training

Accidents at nursery only

My DC potty trained at the beginning of July, really good, a few accidents as is expected, similar amounts at home and nursery and my mum's (2 days my mum 3 days nursery a week)

In September DC moved up a room to the 2.5-school leavers group- it's twice the size of the previous room. DC has preferred to use their small toilets to a potty at nursery right from the start and now mainly uses the toilet at home, without reminders.

In the last month DC has massively regressed at nursery, 6 plus wet and poo accidents a day, just weeing on the floor rather than using the toilet. Up till this last week DC has still been great at home and my mum's. Thus past week after nursery days has wee'd on the floor at home. Now after 1 day at my mum's and one at home again where DC has been great

Loves going to nursery, sometimes doesn't want to come home. I'm frustrated and not sure how to handle it as it's clearly nursery that is the issue. Maybe DC is not emotionally ready for the big room? Doesn't have the language skills to tell me yet.

Help!

Did something happen in the nursery toilets to frighten him? Another child tease him or be mean to him?

What do the nursery have to say about it?

My DC doesn't yet have the language to tell me if anything has happened in the toilets. Nursery are just suggesting a star chart, which I'm not sure is the answer to be honest as I don't think that will deal with the root cause. But I'm not really sure either what I need to ask them to do at the moment.

We potty trained d's in July so same timeline as you. He was 2.3. Our story pretty much matched yours except our regression came when the new baby arrived in August! We had a few weeks of 6+ accidents during his 2 days at nursery!

They suggested the sticker chart and I was dubious but it worked miracles!he still has the occasional accident at nursery but I think it's just such s busy environment he forgets.

I think it is really common to get a regression when s change happens and moving rooms at nursery is a huge thing from their perspective. I would go with the sticker chart (We brought it home and continued it for the first couple of weeks) and just be ready calm and consistent

My DS is 2.10 and seemed to crack potty training in May. Same about of time with grandparents / Nursery as your DC. We still have dirty clothes from accidents at Nursery, 1 or 2 changes per day. With us and grandparents he's fine.

With DS it's mainly a distraction thing, he'll be so busy and engrossed in an activity at Nusery he completely forgets to go. We did get him checked for a urine infection, after a particularly bad couple of days but that was clear. Nursery raised it with us at the same time and luckily we were able to say the urine dip was clear but as part of that conversation it became clear one of their normal practices was not to ask children if they need the toilet, instead they wait for the child to say something or take themselves. They said this was they way many parents prefer to potty train. Once I'd said I was quite happy for them to encourage DS to go, or at least ask him it has made a noticeable difference.

Mine needed to be reminded to go to the loo at nursery. They can get distracted easily. This worked, as long as they remembered to remind!

I agree that it’s a distraction thing.
My son has been quite capable of being dry in the day since he was two, but he did have the odd accident at nursery, just because he was playing with friends/Lego, and got his timing wrong. Reminders are very useful.

They tell me that they ask/remind but DC says no then goes on the floor 10 mins later. Normally I tell myself these things are just a phase, it was just particularly bad last week so I got worried. Thanks for reassurances that this is normal.

I think you might to ask him about the toilets. There might be something about them that he has decided he doesn’t like. Have you been in them with him? You might be able to spot something from his behaviour there.
