DS ready at 18 months?

DS is showing signs of being ready - I'm not sure I am though!

He sometimes goes somewhere private like behind the curtains to do a poo in his nappy and he shows interest in the toilet and has just started telling me he needs the potty before going. (We have only potty one in the garden as I've been letting him run free when it's hot. Do I need several?)

He also seems quite upset when I flush the loo, the fact it's disappeared seems to really disturb him but I've heard this is normal.

The sooner the better for me to be getting rid of nappies but it's the process of getting there and the fact he is quite little that worries me. I was expecting to maybe tackle this next year.

Any tips, advice or recommended reading material would be most welcome smile

I say this on virtually every thread but it's the only advice I've got: read the Oh Crap potty training book! She recommends training between 20 & 30 months but she does have a chapter on training slightly younger children.

I used it with DD when she was 22mo and it's been great!

I started with ds around that age and he was day trained by age 2.

I've just used the 'Oh Crap' method with DD2 at 22 months, she was dry within 2 days. Definitely recommend it.

They pretty much all show some signs from that age but I'd wait as it'll be SO much easier. Just potty trained DD at 2 and a quarter and it was a breeze. She just stopped wearing nappies one day and started using the toilet. She's old enough to manage a little stool and toilet seat herself, plus pulling pants and trousers up and down by herself.

I used oh crap with my first dd at 22m and she was also dry in a couple of days. I followed it to the letter; a couple of friends had less straightforward experiences though

Thanks all - am going to get a copy of this potty training bible and give it a try. I don't want to push DS but I want to be fully prepared for when he really is ready to ditch the nappies smile

My DS was doing all that at 18 months too, so we gave it a go. Unfortunately, his little bladder just wasn't big enough to go very long and he kept having to go to the potty, which frustrated him, so we left it.

He was dry day and night at 2Y 2M though.
