Potty training

Please help! Withholding poo

Hi our dd is 3 and 3 months and majorly has issues with having a poo. She has always had issues but recently it's got lots and lots worse. We've been potty training and it's been going really well with wees. She was doing a poo first thing in her nappy so that was fine too. It's now been about 3 days and she hasn't had a poo. She seemed to be trying to do one on potty to start with but now she is completely withholding it. She crosses her legs and screams at us to leave her alone. She has woken up three times tonight screaming in agony but still won't let it out. She is doing wet farts which we clean but this is also causing her immense pain because it's making her bottom sore. It's horrendous to see her like this. She is under the weather at the moment with conjunctivitis and a cough which is making her tired but she's taking it pretty well. DP and I are so worried we don't know what to do and feel really helpless. We have been giving her lactulose.

Sounds very similar to my ds, he has been holding poo on and off since January when we brought potties. (We still haven't start potty training due to poo holding)

We have to do a suppository every now and then. But this does help the underline problem of the holding in.

Good luck.

I'd see if you can get the GP to prescribe some Movicol to keep things moving. Better than lactulose ime. Put it orange juice.

I took her to gp before. We were in there for an hour and she just told me to give her fibre and lay off talking about poo for a while. It did work tbh but I think this is a bigger problem now.

When I potty trained DD at 2.9yrs she wouldn't poo. I tried reward charts and all sorts and it didn't help at all. In the end I put her back in nappies, didn't talk about toilets at all. She (and I) chilled out a lot. I also cut out white bread and white rice from her diet for a while. And gave her some dates every day. It took a couple of months then she started volunteering to use the toilet (ditched the potty). She would only poo if I sat right next to her, literally touching the toilet. But by then I didn't care, at least she would poo.

I think you should go back to the GP now that it's a bigger problem. If she's screaming and sore she's not going to suddenly decide not to withhold.

We combined a regime of Movicol back with nappies and let things settle. We'd persevered with the trying to get him to poo on the toilet for 5 ,months and had little success. Following the reversion to nappies and Movicol we tried again after letting things settle and he was perfectly happy to poo.

check out the ERIC website for advice.

DS is 4.5yrs and will only poo in a pull up. I've looked into this a lot! It turns out it is a common problem for a variety of reasons. I try to stick to the principle of not making it stressful for him and encourage him to be mindful of his feelings about it. V hard to deal with though.

Thanks so much for all your advice. After waking up a few times in the night she finally did one in her nappy and did the last little bit in the potty! She seems much happier and brighter. I think this is something I have to monitor though as it will probably happen again. I definitely need to look at her diet. Thanks again x

I also second the book "Everybody Poos". DD used to withhold and we would stick her on the loo and read it to her. When she did produce, we would decide what sort of animal pop it looked like (e.g. a dino poo, or a lion poo) Grin . For DD it worked surprisingly quickly and FWIW we didn't find movicol helped at all, because the problem was psychological not physical. It didn't prevent her withholding at all, she just developed a sphincter of iron Shock

My DD turned 3 in May and she refuses to poo on the potty, but will happily use it for a wee. I have to put a pull up on her when she needs to go, otherwise she will hold it in until it gives her tummy ache or is constipated!
She gets so embarrassed about number twos! Sad
