Potty training

Potty training with new baby due imminently! Not my choice.

DS (2.5) keeps pulling off his nappy and wanting to use his potty or sit on the toilet. When asked he says he wants to wear big-boy pants (like pirate Pete) and will say when he's having a wee. He has used his potty very inconsistently (poos before bath and the occasional wee), as we introduced it really casually just to get him used to the idea. He won't be dry at night for a while (he takes water to bed), so I'm only considering day-time potty training for now.

My question is, I'm due dc2 any day now and I was hoping to wait until after the new baby had arrived. There's lots of talk of regression and accidents when a new baby arrives but I feel like I should support DS in his choices. Shall I go ahead and expect a regression? Has anyone else had a similar experience? Any advice welcome!

Ps - are training pants any good or should I just go straight to normal pants?

We are in a similar situation my son is 2 1/2 and I am 32 weeks with our second. We decided to go for it 3 weeks ago and have put him in training pants (we personally think they are handy for saving puddles on floor/sofa, but they don't always save the trousers). He has been having more success than accidents so we have persevered, some days he has had one or two accidents, others none at all and last 2 days hasn't had any. So fingers crossed for now.

I also read a bit about regressing but I just figured we'd cross that if and when we come to it even dealing with that would be better than starting it once baby arrives.

Thanks Bejeena. Pleased potty training is going well for you both. I think I'll let him go on the potty for now if he asks but not push it until I've had the baby. Hard to know what to do for the best isn't it!

At 36 weeks I broke my arm and DS1 said I want to wear pants like my friend. Pants were easier than nappies with a pot on my arm, we didn't look back it was all fine after the first couple of weeks accidents so I had about 3 weeks off nappy changing with a broken arm

Oh no double nightmare! Every cloud hey? Good to know it worked out in your favour too.
